I often find myself wishing I could wake up not remembering all the mistakes I have made in the past. There are many things I’ve done that I regret, and many more things I knew at the time that I should do and never did. My sins seem to keep sneaking up behind me at inopportune times to whisper in my ear, either to entice me to revisit them or to shame me into feeling unworthy of doing any good…or both.
It is fortunate for me that I have no power to undo my past; I would probably ruin everything I have, because what I have done makes me want to be better now. How fortunate that according to Micah 7:18 “God does not retain His anger forever, and forgiving us makes Him happy.” I think I’ve got a lot for him to be happy about! In verse 19 it says that God “will trample on our sins and throw them in the sea.” Imaging that…God taking your sin, throwing it on the ground and jumping up and down on it, then throwing it into the sea making it as though it never was. I can’t forget what I’ve done, but God can. So, when my past decides that it wants to give me grief, I remind it that it has no power over me. God has forgiven me, and who can stand against God?
So, who am I, now? Who are you, now? Look at your hands…the hands that have done so much wrong. The hands that have been made into fists of anger. Those hands are still with you, but now they can be held out in mercy to help others. Your mouth that has spewed hatred and cursed others for their transgressions against you, now can sing songs of love and forgiveness, and give words of hope to those in despair. The feet that have taken you to places you shouldn’t have gone, now can be the feet of Jesus, carrying his Good News.
Carry His cross of love and mercy. Be His hands and feet. Show the heart of God in everything you do and say. Be forgetful of what others have done to you, because God has forgotten your past.
