Devotionals
Another new year is upon us. This is a time of year that many make a resolution to change something about their behavior to make themselves a better person in some way. They want to lose weight, not be such a grouch, stop smoking, got to church more…or they promise to start putting the toilet seat down. Whatever. Most people fail and go back to their old habits within a couple weeks. Why is this?
I believe that if a person really wants to change, they will just decide to do it and not look back. They don’t have to wait for a particular day. If you wait, then it’s something you don’t really want to change about yourself, and if your spirit is not resolved-or determined to do so, then nothing will change.
I’ve been able to speak with a few recovering alcoholics over the years. They have each told me it is a daily struggle. They must wake up every day, and determine that they will not fail. You may not face anything so severe, but I would guess it is the same with you. I know it is with me, just as Paul spoke of it in Romans 7:18&19 “I know that my selfish desires won’t let me do anything that is good. Even when I want to do the right thing, I can’t. Instead of doing right, I do wrong.“ He continues in 22-24 “With my whole heart I agree with the law of God, but in every part of me I discover something fighting against my mind, and it makes me a prisoner of sin that controls everything I do. What a wretched man I am!” This is my favorite part…Paul then asks “Who will save me from all this?” He answers himself in verse 25 “Thank God, Jesus Christ will rescue me!” This is where our resolve must lie. The Rock of salvation! The firm foundation we must build upon to prepare for the storms that will come!
Jesus taught in Luke 9:23-25 “If anyone would follow me, let him forget about himself and take up his cross daily and follow after me. If you want to save your life, you will give up your own. But if you give up your life for Me, you will save it. What will you gain if you own the whole world, but destroy yourself and waste your life?”
We must daily resolve to do what we know is right. We must decide before the moment of testing comes that we will do the right thing, or we will fail. It doesn’t matter what time of year it is…Make the choice today. Make it now.
