Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday January 27, 2010

The lessons I learn from my relationship with Joyce, the wife of my youth are ones that have promise of helping others, therefore I often share. I do this with hope of easing your load and of ingratiating myself with her and thus lightening my own load.

Just this morning she suggested that I the hubby of her youth, (Her word is childhood) take something back to the church that she had brought home. I found this "suggestion" irritating and said so. Need I say anymore? Her response is a classic:

"Larry, I only asked you to do this as the container was full of Charlie's Homemade Vegetable Soup, which we ate last night after church while you usurped Fox News and watched that old man, what's his name, Brett Farve make a fool of himself playing football with those children. And you know the church is right alongside the airport and that means pilots, many of whom are students at ISU and only the Lord knows what they may be up to. That's why I asked you. I know if something happened to me, you would never forgive yourself and how grief stricken you would be; I am sure this would take away some of my joy in heaven."

The above is only the introduction to the book.

Later in the morning I received this from The Great Blonde:

"Needing someone is like needing a parachute. If they aren't there the first time you need them, chances are you won't be needing them again."

Somehow I sensed that lying just beneath the surface was some sort of threat. Being near daft, I don't quite get it, but it will come to me. The statement is thought provoking. Being thought provoking is safer than being "Blonde" provoking. Trust me on this.

The "parachute" line is right on target though in learning to respond to opportunities, many is the man or woman who upon an invitation to greatness or even a better job, put it off and the "need" moved on to another who was ready. Lincoln is reputed to had said,

"I will prepare and someday my chance will come."

On many issues we are warned in the scripture to "Be ready for in such hour as ye think not the Son of Man cometh." If you are praying for the opportunity of a lifetime, why not be preparing for it, thus being ready when it does come along?

As I prepared the container for return to the church I placed a brief note in it stating that I deeply appreciated the scrumptious soup. With lower lip just ever so slightly quivering in the pouting mode I heard, "Do you really think Charlie's soup is better than mine?"

The neighbors reported hearing screaming. I told the Deputy that I had heard nothing.
