Larry Lilly's Letter Monday January 25, 2010

A photo making the Internet rounds shows about a million pigeons gathered with a certain anxious air, ready to get on with their apparent main business. The next frame shows a statue of President Obama about to be unveiled. I suppose the idea is that the pigeons will soon be doing what pigeons are noted for. As coach Lou Holtz said, "One day you're the pigeon the next the statue."

This FWD came to me as I was recovering from yet another defeat at the hand of The Great Blonde. It started innocently enough. A TV anchor butchered a phrase and I commented on this, failing to take into consideration that said anchor indeed works for the divine Fox News Company. If someone on Fox says anything it is right. Period. The wife of my youth immediately informed me that I, Larry Lilly, the man who took her, young and untried at age of seventeen as my bride, and have invested 45 years in a vain attempt to bring her into submission to my far superior way of life, in her smart, all knowing way, am a "Critician."

"Dear one, there is no such word."

"No such word, no such person. Is there a message here for you my dear Hubby?"

I have no idea where the idea of "Dumb Blonde" originated. Sneaky, ruthless in combat, but not dumb. In one brief sentence I was effectively relegated to "nothing." My advice to all young men is, DO NOT under any circumstance even date a blonde, let alone marry one. If you have already fallen into this trap, trusting the Lord to preserve you is your only hope.

One lesson I learned is to watch Fox News and keep my thoughts to myself.

Kritikos is the Greek for critic and Webster deals kindly as the primary meaning:

1 a : one who expresses a reasoned opinion on any matter (as a work of art or a course of conduct) involving a judgment of its value, truth, or righteousness, an appreciation of its beauty or technique, or an interpretation.

I have already established that there is NO reasoned way to critique Fox News, but in other matters it is wise to keep in mind there are no known memorials to critics, and why do we engage in criticism at all? The best criticism is the critiquing of our self. And we do this effectively not by the opinions of others, but by a well established code; the Word of God with Christ as the Bench Mark as to how life is to be lived relative to the teaching. Do my actions measure up to the example of Christ in real life situations?

1 Peter 2:21: "For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:"
