In this world we seem to be surrounded by constant change. For years, you eat your favorite food, and then all of a sudden it’s bad for you. A few years later, it’s healthy for you. Eggs…part of a hearty breakfast, then too high in cholesterol, and then they’re healthy again. Sugar is fine, then you can’t have any, then they say that sugar is better for you than the artificial sweeteners. It’s the same with butter. Remember sneezing into your sleeve when you were a kid? You mother or teacher didn’t like that much, so you cover your mouth with your hands. Then you wash your hands and you’re your good to go. Now, they say you’re supposed to sneeze into your sleeve, again. Michael Jordan retired and came back how many times? How about Brett Favre? Politicians promise to represent us and hold true to the values they say they have when they campaign, then betray us once they are in office. Don’t even get me started on “Christian” radio stations playing secular music because it’s “family friendly” or “positive.” I listen to Christian radio because it helps me maintain the proper mind set. If I want secular music in my head, I have plenty of other stations to choose from, thank you!
I’m getting tired of the betrayals. I’m tired of people speaking out of both sides of the mouth. I’m tired of people and things we used to be able to trust changing with the wind. I want something I can anchor myself to that will not change. I need a firm foundation to build my life on, something true and constant. Like in Matthew 7:24-27, where Jesus teaches “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
I have found in Deuteronomy 7:9 “that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations,” and Hebrews 1:10-12 says “You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands; they will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment, like a robe you will roll them up, like a garment they will be changed. But you are the same, and your years will have no end.” We see here that God is always true and faithful to those who choose to belong to Him. If I do, then I find myself in a position where I agree with Paul in Romans 8:38-39 “I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
God’s word is always true and will never change. He keeps his promises. He won’t betray me. The principles I have found in the Bible actually work! They aren’t just good guidelines or suggestions, and if I follow them, then God works in my favor. Psalm 18:2 says “The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” How awesome is that? He is my Everlasting, Unchanging, All-Powerful, God…and somehow He chooses to forget my shortcomings, my faults and failures, and finds some way to love me. Always.
