Long ago I made an observation. I’m sure many others have come to a similar conclusion. When people are confronted with the Gospel, they tend to have a strong response one way or another. They run from it, or are drawn to it. Like cockroaches and moths. Turn on the light in a dark room and if you have roaches (I pray that you don’t), they run to hide from the light. The moths, however, will fly around the light.
When I was a kid, there weren’t many questions I had that my Dad couldn’t answer, and one of the few questions he didn’t have an answer for (and I don’t remember him making one up as he often did) was why the moths are attracted to the light. Well, these days you can find an answer to almost any question with a few clicks of the mouse and some clickety-clack noise on your keyboard.
What I found was very interesting. Moths are nocturnal. They fly around in the dark using the moon as a navigational tool. They aren’t attracted to the streetlights and porch lights, they are confused by them. They fly in circles around them because they think something along the lines of “Okay, I have to keep the light over my left shoulder to go this way.” The same way a magnet can throw off a compass.
Likewise, some people are misguided. Some are following nutty people like those poor folks that died with Jim Jones, or David Koresh. Some are misguided by bad advice from people they think are their friends. Some are misguided by their own bad advice. They are trapped like the moths constantly circling the streetlamp, and never getting to where they really want to go.
To make a long story short (TOO LATE!), make sure you are following wise counsel. Do not be distracted by comparing yourself to others, just aspire to be more like Christ. Do not listen to the words of “friends” if they are contradictory to the truth of the Scriptures. Don’t listen to your own advice or your “heart,” because “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9). Follow the True Light…Christ shows the path to freedom. The decisions you make will determine where you go in eternity.
