Haiti. This tiny island in the sea is reputedly that poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere and I don't doubt it. You already know the devastation is beyond our comprehension. The closest description of the carnage was Charles Krauthammer's explanation that the number of dead comparing the population of Haiti with the United States is equivalent to 1,000 9/11’s in one day.

Missionary contacts are sharing the agony of the people as they are able to communicate with us. Many ramshackle church building are destroyed and must be rebuilt. Homes, which were little more than pieces of scrap metal leaning against each other, are now reduced to nothing. Dead, decaying animals litter what is left of the streets.

The people with the least of what are considered the essentials of life are now suffering with even less.

The United States is responding on the leading edge with thousands of church people and others giving their time and expertise to rescue and rebuild. Doctors are cancelling appointments and literally rushing to the aide of those who are hanging by a very thin thread over the precipice of death. Three United States Nuclear Aircraft carriers are speeding to the island of agony as I write. The carriers are not going to make war, to take advantage of this already prostrate poverty ridden people, but each carrier will have as many as three onboard hospitals, with operating rooms equipped with the latest medical technology, vast supplies of food and the ability make hundreds of thousands of gallons of fresh water from sea water. Plus expert personnel in many areas of present need. The average person in Haiti lives in the grip of demonic religions, hoping the blood of the chickens slain in Voodoo type celebrations can somehow placate "deities" bent on sucking what little they have left from them. To these poverty crushed, disaster weary citizens of Haiti, the Blue Eyed Devils from the United States are steaming full speed ahead, not with songs of battle, chants of plunder, but the poems of mercy written on yet another page of American compassionate action.

When you have nothing and suddenly you are twice as poor it is easy to lose all hope. Into this vast ocean of hopelessness men and women are finding ways to feed, clothe and tell again of hope in Jesus Christ. We who are left at home can and must at least pray for the victims and do whatever we can.
