Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday January 13, 2010

Every now and then I have to lighten up a bit and usually I do this via the ruse of marriage counseling. It seems to work and actually help some folks. Today I depart from the norm with a few laughs and certainly some good old fashioned truth from the Word.

The Nordic Wonder, my little wife of many years (due to her ability to endure) has been watching the news the last few days and she suggested that I would be an ideal candidate for the Presidency of the United States of America. She used clear, concise statements from two leading politicians, Senator Harry Reid and Republican National Chairman, Michael Steele.

What Mr. Reid said of President Obama certainly applies to me for I am also light of color and I do not speak with a Negro Dialect except when it is convenient. On the Republican side I have been called that rare bird, an Honest Injun. So, there; months ahead of the next election, without even thinking about it you have a perfect choice and you already know me via the daily writings. God is nice isn't He.

For some reason I never reached maturity concerning things political. Like one of my Indian forbears, Will Rogers I find the entire political arena to be circus like and about as moral as the band of Gypsies my mom was always warning would try to steal me and sell me to other traveling bands. As you might gather my poverty stricken family had little of the idea of political correctness, they just knew that in order to keep me home they had instill fear of something deep into my psyche. The fear of Gypsies worked well until I was 13 or so and at a local carnival I met the most gorgeous Gypsy girl that ever graced the earth God made just for her. After the third night of my hanging around the ride ran by her father I was assured that if he caught me hanging out at his ride one more night he would use his acumen with a very long knife to make sure I would never be any good for any girl, including his girl. I was pretty sure I got the drift and was sure that in this case cowardice was the better part of valor. I admit that I was always fascinated by the bands of Gypsies that went through our little patch of the world.

I really don't know how or why I moved from politicians to Gypsies other than politicians actually do to the populace the terrible things that our parents assured us the Gypsies would do to us children if we failed to be careful. Figuratively speaking of course.

I remember as a kid really liking President Truman because he wore a hat similar to Gene Autry's and therefore he was alright. And I recall hearing him say on the radio after his presidency "My choices in life were to either be a piano player in a house of ill fame (Actually he said it much more graphically) or a politician. And to tell the truth, there's hardly any difference!"

Several times every week without fail, no matter what brand of politician is in control, I talk with men and women who are living in near paralyzing fear of the country going to the dogs or worse. I try to convince these folks that our hope is in Jesus Christ and His righteousness and if we Christians would start living right we would be the salt of the earth, the saving force in the world. I am amazed at how many good Christians find this to be such a quaint idea.
