If we read this passage in context, rather than just the one verse we will see that Jesus was talking about His second coming and He was leaving to prepare a place for us and then coming back. Thomas replied that he did not know where Jesus was going and wanted to know how he could go with him. The verses following (7-12) they wanted to be shown the Father and Jesus said that if they saw him, they saw the Father and was amazed that they did not know who He was after all the time they had spent together. So the whole conversation was about whether His disciples believed who He was.

When answering Thomas's question, He said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” He then goes on to say in verse 7a, “If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also:” Down in verse 10 and 11, He explains that He and His Father are one, and if you believe for no other reason than for the works I did, believe it.

We can see by this that even though the disciples were committed to Jesus and followed Him for three years; they had doubts about some of the things He said. The Lord went on to promise the Comforter and foretells His betrayal. This was a lot for the disciples to take in because they expected that they were going to be part of His new kingdom on earth right now and were shocked to find out that He was going to die. They were not sure what to believe and were confused until Jesus rose from the dead and walked with them for another 40 days, and then they understood and once empowered at Pentecost, they went forth to tell the Good News to all people.

Now we know that once sin entered the world in the Garden, sin was passed down to all men. There is not one perfect, holy person ever to be born except Jesus Christ from the day of the fall in the Garden until this present time. Since none of us are perfect, none of us can enter the Father's House because He is holy and cannot be around sin. Because of sin, He made a plan from before the foundation of the earth providing an escape for the ones that would accept Jesus as their Savior. The angel announced to Mary to call her son Jesus because He would save His people from their sins.

Getting back to the verse it is very obvious that Jesus is telling His disciples, “Hey, this is the plan that was made from before the foundation of the earth; and there is no other way to get to the Father except through Me because I am the sacrifice for the sins of the world. Believe it and live, ignore it and be condemned.” We may not like it, but God makes the rules, we do not; and if we want to have eternal life rather than eternal death, we must follow God's Plan, there is no other way. Before you think it is unfair, what if God decided NOT to have a plan to save us? What if He decided that the people of the earth were just not worth the effort? You see, the mercy and love of God extends grace to the ones that will believe and every one who accepts Christ is worth the penalty He paid on the cross; so do not throw away your only opportunity by not believing or trying to figure out a better plan, “I am the way, the truth and the life: no man cometh to the Father, but by me.”
