THE TREE

We love to see those Christmas trees
With all their decorations,
And celebrate the birth of Christ
The Lord of all creation.

How precious are those ornaments
That make the tree so bright,
But the tree that means the most to me
Was at Calvary one dark night!

There was a tree and on it hung
The precious Son of God,
The only red that upon that tree
Was my Savior’s precious blood.

There were no stockings to be found
No candy in a sack,
There were no strip-ed candy canes,
Just stripes upon His back!

There were no artificial lights
No bulbs upon that tree,
For on it hung the light of life,
The Christ of Calvary.

There was no garland ‘round the top
Entwined with silver thread,
Just a homemade crown of thorns
Upon my Savior’s head.

There were no bows of red or green
To make the scenery gay,
But blood and water from the side
Of Jesus on that day.

They drove no nails into that tree
To hold it to a stand,
But they drove three old rusty spikes
Into His feet and hands.

So when I ponder on these things
What means the most to me,
Is that my gift was not under,
But it was on the tree.
