COUNTRY CORRECTION

I’ve seen all ‘critters great and small
Most ever’ thing what growed,
But the orneriest one that I’ve run across,
Is the child that’s never NO’d.

He don’t know the meaning o’ the word,
It ‘uz never taught to him.
He’s never had no hickory tea
Or felt a peach tree limb!

The psychologist says, “It’s child abuse,
It learns ‘um violence don’t ye see.”
Well they kept it secret from my Pa,
For he shore did whallop me!

Oh, little Tom’s misunderstood
He’s sweet as all confection.
If you tend to him with violence,
Why, you’ll give him a complexion!

Or, some other dern fool thing like that
Is what I thought they said.
Any way, when my Pa’d give me one
It always came out red!

Now little Tom’s a bossy ‘cuss
I want it “now” he says demanding.
If I’d have said that to my Pa
I’d have been of most men upstanding!

And I’d have been that way for several days
‘Till the soreness had wore out.
Yes my Pa he sure had a way of
“Talkin’ these thing out!”

But you know what I think it worked,
I’ve never been in jail!
He never had to sell a cow
Or horse, to pay my bail!

I’ve never stooped to drunkenness
Or all sins revelry.
‘Cause I didn’t want to taste again
My old Pa’s hickory tea.

Now we’ve all seen what is the lot
O’ the child who’s ne’er corrected,
The child doth come to nothing
For nothings e’er expected!

But my Pa sure aimed high for me
From the teachings he selected.
I’m not sure I ever made the mark,
But I sho’ ‘nuff was corrected!
