[SILENCE.]

(Long pause.)
"My Dad died,
this time 'a year."

[TENDER VOICE.]
"I know,
child."

"And, OTHER stuff...
none of which, was
very PRETTY."

[QUIET VOICE.]
"No,
My child."

(Shrug.)
(Deep sigh.)
"So.....this time'a year,
is like walkin' through
a pit'a QUICKSAND:
wearing a pair 'a boots
that are ATTACHED.. to a
couple'a 5000-pound WEIGHTS."

[NOD.]
[GAZE AT AN EVERGREEN
TREE ON A SNOWY FRONT LAWN,
IN THE TWILIGHT,
DRAPED WITH A STRING
OF BRIGHTLY COLORED LIGHTS.]

(Look up at the ceiling.)
(Pause.)
"So.....HOW do I get
THROUGH IT,
Lord:
all the QUICKSAND?"

[SILENCE.]

"What do I DO?"

"Stay,
child."

(Squint up at the
ceiling.)
"STAY THERE?"

[GENTLE VOICE.]
"With
Me."
