The Bohemian

A Bohemian family traveled to the State of Iowa as a part of their summer vacation. The mother and father were looking forward to their visit to the United States and to enjoy the Iowan countryside. While enjoying the beauty of the State of Iowa, the father took a stroll. As he walked through the woods, he came across a family going through its daily activities. Not knowing where he was, the father became lost. Hungry, thirsty and tired, the father knew that he could be in serious trouble in such a large, unfamiliar area.

Fortunately, it so happened that a boy working the field caught sight of the bewildered man. The boy approached the man with the intent to help him through his difficulty.

“Where ya’ headed sir?” asked the boy.

“No place in particular.” Responded the man in the best English he could muster up.

“Can I help you, sir?”

“Sure!” responded the man.

“May I get a drink of water somewhere and maybe something to eat?”

“Maybe I can. Why don’t you come home with me? My parents might be able to help you. I’m sure they’ll give you something to eat and drink. We’re a Christian family.”

“Okay!” said the man.

So the man followed the boy to his farm house. When the boy and man arrived at the small Iowan farm house, the boy’s extended family was present for a family get together. The man with the unusual accent, manner and dress was, at first, looked upon as a potential problem. However, the man soon became comfortable with this family and they him.

The family began singing and enjoying each other’s presence and the man from the country unknown to them. Impressed by this Christian family, the man began to note the musical themes of the songs the family members sang. Before the end of the day, the man and this family became friends forever bonded by their belief in Almighty God and His goodness.

Some years later, the man took his themes and experiences with the Iowan family back to his native Bohemia (now the Czech Republic). For the man was the world famous Bohemian composer, Antonin Dvorak, composer of the 9th Symphony (“New World Symphony”) and the American String Quartet heard the world over. The family Dvorak heard singing then wrote down the notes of their songs was a poor African-American extended Christian family meeting in the spirit of Christian unity and unconditional love.
