That we live in what may well be called "The Age of Amusement" is obvious and only the passage of time, and perhaps entrance into eternity will reveal the enormous loss to the forward progress of our nation as a result.

The very word "amusement" has a number of implications such as this one from Webster: "diversion of the attention (as from the truth or one's real intent)" one of the roots of amusement is "MUSE" meaning one of nine Greek goddesses who "gave song to men and sang the song through their lips." A more sensible definition means "creative musing or deep thought."

When the "a" is added you have a word that essentially means, "No time for serious thought." The "A" cancels the muse, or thought.

I set to musing along this line when I read a statement by a man who compared to the goofy depths of today's thinkers may be considered a fundamental muse, wrote:

"People demand freedom of speech to make up for the freedom of thought which they avoid."

Soren Aabye Kierkegaard was a Danish writer who wrote about serious Christianity and the relation of man to his creator and also put the pen to many thoughts about social issues. It is a given that the ideas of one realm would contradict the other, much as people with fundamental ideas about Christ today often hold to liberal ideas in other realms. On occasion I have heard men and a few women of my persuasion on things biblical condemn Kierkegaard while preaching his Christian message in exactitude which summed is this:

"It is not enough to believe the Christian doctrine; one must also live it."

That we as a people do not engage in thought is one of the greatest breeches of the commandments in the history of the world. One meaning of "In Vain" used in the tablets of stone has a meaning "Without thought;" the teaching being that life is NOT to be lived with thoughtless abandon; but with a serious thought process relative to the implications of the thought, words and actions.

Our education system teaches students to accept the thought given in the text with no thought of their own. People who do not know how to think will soon be raped of the right to free speech and other principles of liberty. Think about it. Please.
