I have come across many Christians who have told me that Jesus is the Son of God but not God himself.

I would like to answer my own brothers in Christ that if Jews thought of Jesus as casually as they did then Jesus would not die on the cross.

Let me introduce you to the environment in Jesus day. The Jews were very scared of blaspheming against God because God has said in the Ten Commandments that you shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. So the Jewish people used to even avoid saying “God”, for fear that it may be spoken in vain. In fact if you see some Jewish writings you will see them avoid to their best ability the word the word “God”. I have a Jewish friend who writes God as G-d.

Now, during the time of Jesus, the Jews were understandably even more orthodox. When Jesus said that he was the Son of God and that he is one with his Father (John 10:30), the Jews would begin to stone him because he claimed to be of the same substance of God, which in their minds was blasphemy.

The Father and I are one.”

The Jews put Jesus to death because Jesus got the message through to them. The message was that Jesus was not only God’s Son; he was also their (Jews) God. I have quoted John 10:25-39 & John 19:7.

John 10:25-39
25Jesus answered, "I did tell you, but you do not believe. The miracles I do in my Father's name speak for me, 26but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. 27My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. 29My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand. 30I and the Father are one."
31Again the Jews picked up stones to stone him, 32but Jesus said to them, "I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?"
33"We are not stoning you for any of these," replied the Jews, "but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God."
34Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your Law, 'I have said you are gods'? 35If he called them 'gods,' to whom the word of God came—and the Scripture cannot be broken— 36what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, 'I am God's Son'? 37Do not believe me unless I do what my Father does. 38But if I do it, even though you do not believe me, believe the miracles, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father." 39Again they tried to seize him, but he escaped their grasp.

Now let’s jump a few chapters to John 19:7 and lets listen to the reason the people gave Pilate, as to why they wanted Jesus crucified.

John 19:7
7The Jews insisted, "We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God."

Paying special attention to Jewish response in John 10:33 & John 19:7, you can see that the Jews got the exact message what Jesus delivered, i.e. Jesus was not just some divine being, being God’s Son but he was also their God & creator (Colossians 1:16). Jesus died getting the truth across. Had Jesus preached that he was the Messiah, who was just a prophet or just the son of God & nothing more, then may be Jesus would have lived till a ripe old age. However Jesus was not a person who told people what they wanted to hear, he spoke the truth but with compassion & as you can see He also died delivering the truth to His people.

The coming of Jesus; was God revealing Himself as One in the Father Son and Holy Spirit, to His people. His people, as per my Old Testament scripture did not know their God (Jeremiah 4:22) & from Job 23:8-9, you can see that Job, in search of spirituality moved forward backward right and left but Job could not see God or even learn of what he is doing or even know (perceive) God.

Jeremiah 4:22
22 The Lord says, “My people are stupid;
they don't know me.
They are like foolish children;
they have no understanding.
They are experts at doing what is evil,
but failures at doing what is good.”

Job 23:8-9
8 “Behold, I go forward, but he is not there,
and backward, but I do not perceive him;
9 on the left hand when he is working, I do not behold him;
he turns to the right hand, but I do not see him.

Coming back, you see, it is ONLY through faith in Jesus that we are God’s children & that is one of the reason why, Jesus thought us the following prayer in Mathew 6:9:15.

Mathew 6:9:15
9"This, then, is how you should pray:
" 'Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10your kingdom come,
your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
11Give us today our daily bread.
12Forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.[a]' 14For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

The above prayer was unheard at that time. I would also like to quote Galatians 3:26 & Romans 8:14, which will show you that we are God’s children through faith in Jesus & those who are led by the Holy Spirit to trust in Jesus.

Galatians 3:26
26You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus,

Romans 8:14
because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

I would like to close this post by showing that the Spirit and Jesus are not separate. The Spirit leads you to Jesus and reveals the truth about him, so that you may acknowledge Him as your Lord and Savior.

John 15:26 (Jesus’ Word)
26 “The Helper will come — the Spirit, who reveals the truth about God and who comes from the Father. I will send him to you from the Father, and he will speak about me.

1 Corinthians 12:3
I want you to know that no one who is led by God's Spirit can say “A curse on Jesus!” and no one can confess “Jesus is Lord”, without being guided by the Holy Spirit.
