I am back at school in history class,
The teacher’s voice is a distant drone;
The sun shines in through the dusty glass;
I wander off to his monotone.

Out the window on my thoughts I fly
Winging far away to distant lands,
Over oceans wide and mountains high,
Above frozen lakes and desert sands.

While the others write down battle dates,
Who killed who and many mundane things
I have flown to worlds my mind creates
Carried off on absentminded wings.

Many years have passed, I’ve travelled much;
My life journey’s been in real time,
But I’ve never let my heart lose touch
With the fantasies of my childhood mind.

A fond time traveller I remain,
And so often I return in thought
To my world behind the window pane
Where all my wandering ways were wrought.

There is time traveller in us all—
An escape from life’s reality
To a pleasant place where big and small
Can indulge their hearts in fantasy.
