THE NIGHT WIND.]

(Impatient, cranky voice.)
"The class!
THE CLASS!
There wasn't as
much talk,
about the JEWS,
TONIGHT!"

[CALM NOD.]
[GAZE AT THE COLD
WIND IN SOUTH
TEXAS BLOW AN
EMPTY TRASH
CAN OVER.]

(Nodding.)
"It was much BETTER."
Although, I didn't really
get all that 'Kingdom' talk."
(Shrug.)

"Read It
to Me,
child."

(Curious squint
up at the ceiling plaster.)
"LORD?
Can....You,
read... ENGLISH?
Is THAT IT?"

[CHUCKLE.]
"What is it,
My child?"

"Well......
You're always asking
me to READ to You;
I was just WONDERING....."
(Curious squint.)

[SMILE!]
"Ah;
I see."
[NOD.]
No."

"No....You can't read
ENGLISH?
Or....no....You CAN?"

[PATIENT GAZE.]
"What Part
did you read
tonight,
Mein kin'der."

(Listening to the
news on the radio.)
"What?
Oh.
It was about the wheat,
and..the TARES! I had never
HEARD of a 'tare',
before......all THIS."

[SMILE!]
"Before
all what,
Mein kin'der."

"All this....."
(Wave hands,
around, in the air.)
"Ya know: all THIS."

[CHUCKLE.]
[NOD.]
"What is a tare,
My beloved."

"It's eh......Old ENGLISH,
for 'weed'. At least,
I THINK it is.....but,
they didn't SPEAK
Old English, in those DAYS!
Didn't they speak GREEK?
Or....LATIN?
Or....ROMAN?"

[GAZE AT ANOTHER
TRASH CAN: THIS TIME,
A FULL ONE.]
[WATCH THE OWL SWOOP
DOWN ON SOMETHING
OR OTHER.]

"Or....ARAMAIC?
Wasn't that some sort'a
TEX-MEX?
For, HEBREW-ARABIC?"

[BLOW THE WIND,
IN ANOTHER DIRECTION.]
[ANOTHER TRASH CAN
FALLS OVER; THIS ONE
IS ONLY HALF-FULL.]
"Go on,
child."

"About what."
(Squint.)
"Oh.
Yeah; the TARES!
THE TARES!"
(Grimmace!)
"That was sort of a
WEIRD story, Lord."

"Read It
to Me,
My beloved."

(Open Bible.)
(Flip around.)
"Here it is:

Another Parable
He put forth
to them,
saying;
'The kingdom
of Heaven
is like a man who
sowed good seed
in his field;
but while men slept,
his enemy came
and sowed tares
among the wheat.....'
[Matthew 13:24-25]

It's just a weird... STORY!
I didn't like that part...
where the REAPERS come back,
and burn up all the TARES."
(Shiver.)
"It's not a very
nice STORY!"

[LONG PAUSE.]
[BLOW ANOTHER COLD
WIND ACROSS THE
LONE PRAIRIE.]
"No,
child.
It isn't."

The Son of Man
will send out
His angels,
and they will
gather out of
His kingdom
all things that
offend,
and those
who practice
lawlessness,
and will cast
them
into
the furnace
of fire.
[Matthew 13:41-42]
