tonight,
LORD!"

[SOFT CHUCKLE!]
"Where,
My child?"

"On that VIDEO!
About JESUS!
In that..BIBLE STUDY!"
(Grimmace!)
(Put hands to both ears.)
"What am I GONNA DO?"

[NOD.]
"Listen."

(Grimmace!)
"I try NOT to!"
(Look at the ceiling.)
"That WORD makes
me CRINGE!"

[CALM NOD.]
"Which one,
O, beloved."

"JEWS!"
(Make a face to the ceiling.)
(Cover plump face.)
(Woeful moan.)

[CHUCKLE.]

"I have FRIENDS,
in there! But....!"

"But what,
precious."

"WHY D'THESE
BIBLE STUDIES
HAVE TO TALK
ABOUT THE JEWS,
ALL THE TIME?"
(Shout to the ceiling.)
"Why can't...
they,
talk about..
the ESKIMOS?
I WISH I WAS
AN ESKIMO!"

[WIPING AWAY TEARS
OF LAUGHTER.]

"It's not FUNNY,
LORD!"

[LOVING SMILE!]
"What did you
read about,
tonight,
My precious?"

(Clueless squint.)
"That CANAANITE LADY!"
(Shrug.)
"I DUNNO....
her daughter some DEMON....?
I dunno; it was a WEIRD
STORY! And....JESUS
didn't act,
very NICE,
at ALL!"

[CHUCKLING.]
"Read It,
to Me,
child."

(Make another face.)
(Flip pages, impatiently.)
"There was something
about DOGS, in it....."
(Mumble.)
"Here it is:

And behold,
a woman of Canaan...
cried out to Him..
Have mercy on me...!
...He answered..
It is not good to take
the children's bread
and throw it to the
little dogs.
[Matthew 15:22-26]

It was a really WEIRD
SCENE,
LORD."

[PATIENT PAUSE.]
"And,
what happened,
Mein kin'der?"

(Squint to the corner
of the ceiling.)
"WHEN?
When, I was tryin'
to set that new
ALARM CLOCK,
tonight, LORD?
I STILL haven't
got it figured OUT!
It's like....somethin'
from the SPACE SHUTTLE!"

[PATIENT SIGH.]
[PATIENTLY WAITING.]

(Thoughtful squint.)
"Oh.
Ya mean,
in HERE?"
(Point to the pages.)

[INFINITELY PATIENT NOD.]

"Well....."
(Frowning,
and squinting,
down at the pages.)
"I guess,
He RELENTED,
and decided to
HEAL her!
But....I didn't
really get this
part, about the
DOGS?"
(Squint to the ceiling.)
"Did they even,
HAVE pet... DOGS,
in those DAYS?"

[PATIENT GAZE.]

(Shrug.)
"She was just,
PESTERING...
Him,
so MUCH...."
(Shrug.)
(Gaze up at ceiling.)
"I guess,
He FIGURED...."

[QUIET VOICE.]
"Child,
Who AM I?"

(Frown.)
"Well.....I USED
to think,
You were the
JEWISH God!
NOW...."
(Confused shake of the
rumpled head.)
"I dunno,
WHO Ya ARE!"

"I know,
My beloved."

(Sip some bottled water.)
(Frown.)
(Get up to get a bottle
of root beer,
from the fridge.)
"LORD?"

"Yes,
My beloved?"

"When I get to
Heaven,
can I have a
little BASSETT HOUND?
I always WANTED,
one 'a THOSE!"

[CHUCKLING.]
"We'll see,
precious.
We'll see."

Then,
Jesus answered
and said to her,
O woman,
great is your faith!
Let it be to you
as you
desire.
And, her daughter
was healed,
from that
very hour.
[Matthew 15:28]
