I WANT TO SING IN THE ANGEL CHOIR

There’s a house among the shadows
Where my mind goes and stays a lot
It’s a sweet memory of Mammy
Memories are all I’ve got

A three room shack across the creek
To the left of the old dirt road
Love lived there in bundles
Each day new seeds were sewn

She raised us all by herself
And never did complain
There were five of us in all
It was all our gain

She took us to church on Sunday
Sunday night we did the same
In the middle of the week on Wednesday
We did the same thing all over again

Sometimes in the middle of the night
When everyone is asleep in my house
My spirit goes back to the old homestead
I’m as quiet as a little church mouse

I take a walk in the middle of the night
Transferred in the spirit I go
Bouncing back home to Kentucky
Please tears do not flow

I lift the latch on the back kitchen door
A rusty nail was all it was
Fastened from one side to the other
A very fine touch of country class

If I position my mind just perfect
I can see so much more
The cook stove and the old stove pipe
Back there beside the door

There next to the big window set the table and the chairs
We gathered at the table prayed to God with all our might
I can taste the beans and corn bread
And feel Mammy by my side

What?
The light is still in the window
After all these years
The moon beams light that room
Is my mammy still here?

A whisper of a voice, “Would you like to wake her, Mary?”
I am going to let you see
In the spirit of the moment
Come take a rest with me!

Through the door-way to the little bedroom
I walk very quietly on tip-toe
The essence of the moment
I almost lose control

There she is, asleep in all her splendor
Her long hair decorates the pillow where she sleeps
I ask you Lord, “please help me.”
I do so need to weep

“Don’t weep Mary”, says the whispered voice
For I have made this night for you
Pull up a chair and rest awhile
I will show you what to do

I pull the chair close to Mammy
I touch her soft little cheek
I whisper Mammy, “I love you so”!
My body is crumpled and weak

She turns her head toward me
A smile forms on those lips
Young and pretty as the angels
Oh Lord, what a trip

A window opens in the heavens
An angel choir begins to sing
All those angels are glowing
They have silvery blue tipped wings

The whisperer opens my heart strings as He says,
“You want to be a member of the angel choir
That is what you said in worship
Tonight, you will get your hearts desire”!

Suddenly I had wings just like Mammy’s
Through the heavens we did fly
Mammy clasped my hands so tightly
We flew so very high

There we were seated right in the middle
Of that angel heavenly choir
My wings floated high above me
It was almost more than I can share

“Are you ready, Sister Mary”?
“Yes Lord, I am ready,” Came my humbled reply
My heart burst into song
The angels joined me and Mammy
We all sang loud and long

“O victory in Jesus, My Savior, forever.
He sought me and bought me With His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him And all my love is due Him,
He plunged me to victory, Beneath the cleansing flood.”
