Stretching your horizons can be a positive in your life
By Dan Langerock
It has been said “a grave is a rut with the ends kicked out”. If you find yourself in the dilemma of being bored or feeling left out of life, answer this question: When was the last time you stretched your horizons by learning something new on a regular basis?
Instead of the “same old, same old”, look for something you can apply your mind to that will stimulate your thinking: a class at the college---either regular or community courses, a new hobby that you’ve heard about but never tried, volunteering somewhere, or anything that will stretch you from where you are into a new realm of possibilities.
If you take a class, look for something challenging. You will meet a whole set of new people and have fun in the process adding new talents or ideas to your ‘quiver’ of life experiences. Try taking a class that you didn’t do so well in before, and make yourself reach mentally. For instance, if you are taking a math course, there is a new math lab on campus where you can get help if you should get stuck on a problem or concept.
If you choose to volunteer, look for an area you can help someone and make a difference. My wife and I used to volunteer at the library teaching reading and math. My Mom taught a child how to read one-on-one in a classroom setting for a while. It will give you a wonderful feeling to see results in this manner.
You can choose to stay in the rut of boredom if you wish for that is your choice, but you don’t have to if you really want to make a positive contribution to your life as well as to others. Some places only require four hours of service at a time or less. Many will let you set your own hours as well. Remember, “If you always do what you have always done, you will always be what you have always been”. Sure, it can be scary to reach beyond your comfort zone, but the fulfillment it brings will be worth it.
