Larry Lilly's Letter Thursday May 14, 2009
I browsed through "Preacher Helps," the monthly Internet paper of Dr. Don Boys on yesterday and it was refreshing to read after this politician turned dynamic man of God. (Actually Don was a pastor/evangelist when elected to the state legislature in Indiana several years ago. He was just "too much" for the warm and fuzzy crowd).
While reading Don's paper I came across the following quote from Will Rogers, the great Native American humorist.
"I'd rather be the man who bought the Brooklyn Bridge than the one who sold it."
Mr. Rogers was referring to the then famous selling of the Brooklyn Bridge to a gullible tourist by two con men, George C. Parker and William McCloundy. These two proved that Barnum's famous "There's a sucker born every minute" was in fact an understatement.
Actually it is better to be conned than to be the one doing the conning and Will Rogers knew the truth of this statement.
A story has circulated for years concerning John Wesley being robbed and his comments about it.
"Upon leaving the service I was accosted by an armed robber who demanded my purse. I gave it to him with the admonition, "The blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth from all sin." I am thankful that I was robbed and not the robber. I am thankful that the purse was old and I am thankful that it contained little money." Upon giving this testimony a man rose to his feet and said, "I confess that I am the man who robbed you on that long ago night and I have asked God to forgive me." John Wesley immediately responded, "The blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth from all sin."
One of the spiritual tactics that I use when someone "sells" the bridge to me is to forgive the person, attempt to get over any loss and go on. My forgiving of the person actually does them little good at the time, until they ask, 1John 1:9, agreement as to the nature of the wrong, but instant forgiveness keeps me from becoming what Dr. James Grey called "A bitter old man."
Yep, I would rather buy the bridge than sell it. Thank you Will Rogers.
