Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday April 22, 2009
A few weeks ago I got a note from my old buddy, Pastor Lloyd Shepherd. The note had a saying that Lloyd had copied on parchment, using a goose quill, (that's what they used back in those day) that fell from the lips of his favorite professor in college, one Dr. Art Williams. It was wise advice in those days, and it is worth its weight in platinum today.
"Just because it sounds good, does NOT mean that it is good and sound."
Dr. Williams was not talking about trumpets, but ideas, means of getting things done, and business plans. The saying fits many of life's situations and a wise person will learn to apply the wisdom of it.
Prior to Madoff making off with the bucks, his ideas, his business plan, his mode of operation seemed very sound and very, very good. Not to be. It sounded good, but it was not good or sound. Many a tear bears testimony to the fallacy of Madoff's wonder working prowess.
The same principle is true in the affairs of each one of us; we dream, we set goals, we make plans and we exert effort and more often than not fall flat on our face or other body part. Some feel sorry for us, others laugh out loud, and some supposed friends quietly just snigger a bit.
Dr. Williams made his comment in reference to biblical things, ideas, truths that transform and he was teaching students who were in turn to teach congregations to learn to recognize serious error by holding the new idea up to the truth of God's word with the understanding that the new wild and wonderful discovery had to meet the acid test via comparison to the Word. Failing to pass this test it was certified as neither sound nor good.
Have you ever stopped and really thought about how simple your life would be if when contemplating any decision the ultimate test would be comparison to the Word? Excess debt would no longer be on the table. A non spiritual person would not be your mate, you would not have addiction problems, a partner would not abscond with the hard earned money from your business. The list goes on you know. The stately prophet, Isaiah dealt with this in Isaiah 8:20 and gave this good and sound advice:
"To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them."
