Down comes before Up


Down, into the deep dark soil
A single seed is sown.
Down, into the darkest deeps
It faces death alone.
Down, away from human eye
And all the light of earth
Down, it dies and doing so
There springs forth light and birth.

Up, the healthy shoots begin
To surge towards the light.
Up, they rise in growing strength
Against the darkness fight.
Up, they break through earth’s dark crust
And there they testify,
That life abundant always springs
From those prepared to die.


Down, into this sinful world
The Word became a Man.
Down, to clothe Himself in flesh
And enter time’s short span.
Down, His sinless, purest life
Was put to death for me,
Down, He carried sin, guilt, shame,
So sinners could go free.

Up, He rose on Easter Day
The stone away was rolled.
Up, no longer in the tomb,
Death could not keep its hold.
Up, in Resurrection Power
The victory now won,
Up, to Heaven, alive He reigns,
God’s own beloved Son.


Down, I’m crucified with Christ
And He now lives in me.
Down, I’d lay sin’s strong desires
For more like Him I’d be.
Down, I kneel before Him
Surrendering my all.
Down, I’d still all clamour
To hear His every call.

Up, I’ll rise to serve Him
And give to Him each day.
Up, I’ll lift desires and needs,
‘Lord, Teach me how to pray.’
Up, and out, and round-a-bout,
Whatever’s in my ‘cup’,
I want my life to shine for Him
So others can look up.



Down, I live a pilgrim
For a short time here on earth.
Down, I know God’s mercies every day,
Right from my birth.
Down, only here, tell others
Of God, who sent His Son.
Down to plead, and down to pray,
So sinners might be won.

Up, one day, to meet Him
And look upon His face.
Up in love, to thank Him
For dying in my place.
Up, to live for ever
In the City of the King,
Up to sing eternal praise
To Jesus Christ my King.
