Faith
In school, have you ever known about a test days in advance but procrastinated until the night before it to study? I know I am definitely guilty of this. When you do this, you end up cramming the night before and your knowledge that is being tested may not be as thorough as it should be. Our faith is the same way. We know about our “test.” But do we always study for it from the time we knew about it? Maybe you’re thinking, “I know I should be getting closer to God and learning more about him, but I have time to do it later in my life.” Whether you think so or not, you may not have that kind of time. God could call you home at any given moment. We all should be constantly striving to learn more about him and become closer to him.
Why should we do this?
There are two reasons that we should learn as much about God as possible. The first is so that we may become close with God in our walk with him. The second is so that we can share that knowledge with others as he commands it in 1 Peter 3:15—“But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” What this is saying is that we should all be knowledgeable and confident in our faith and knowledge so that we can effectively defend our faith to those who may question it. These are some of the “tests” we will come across. It is spiritual warfare, and we must be properly trained and equipped with faith and knowledge.
If we are rooted in God’s word, we will be able to withstand all of the temptations and afflictions life throws at us. “See, I have refined you, though not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.” (Isaiah 48:10) I can tell you from personal experience that if you make learning more about God and your relationship with him, any difficulty presented to you in life will be extremely able to be withstood. However, without that closeness with God, you will be all on your own, and it is sometimes almost impossible to withstand temptations and fold under afflictions without God.
“Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid.” – Proverbs 12:1
It is way too easy to allow ourselves to desire knowledge of other earthly things over the knowledge of God and his word. “The discerning heart seeks knowledge, but the mouth of a fool feeds on folly.” (Proverbs 15:14) Knowledge is good to have, but the knowledge of God’s truths will far surpass any other knowledge. In Psalm 119:92, David says, “If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction.” That means that if David had been delighting in the knowledge of anything else, he would not have been able to withstand his afflictions. I pray and urge all of you to be like David, and delight in God’s law in His word.
“Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” (John 17:3)
