At the end of your life you will groan, when your flesh and body are spent. You will say, "How I hated discipline! How my heart spurned correction!" (Proverbs 05:11,12)
I remember in high school always having one fellow student who would ask, "Why do we have to study history?" The student's thesis was that history had no practical application to his life. That question is asked in just about every history class in every high school. The premise is always wrong. We are told in Scripture that the things that are written about the past (history) were written so that we can learn and avoid the mistakes of the past. There is a popular saying that says those who do not know history are destined to repeat it. This proverb is the testimony of someone whose life was ill spent. The problem, he says, is that he hated discipline and never accepted correction. The lesson of his testimony is that we should embrace discipline, and accept correction. You can learn from bad examples as well as good ones. That is why the testimony of the Scripture contains both. You can learn from history.
