Larry Lilly's Letter Thursday October 30, 2008
As I read the papers and the internet version thereof, (Wednesday) I thought to myself, that's who we usually think to, that our nation is in a terrible fix. It is near the end of electioneering, at least for a while, and one word, not found on any page, nonetheless insisted on leaping off the page.
It dawned on me that this missing word just might be the key to our personal and national problems, for without it no civilized endeavor can long succeed. Tragically, is appears the word fails to impact those who are begging to lead us at all, though it seems to influence one more than the other according the news. I admit I was surprised to read the following from the pen of Bob Kerry as quoted by Campbell Brown. Kerry's article is in the New York Post and Ms. Brown quoted him in her CNN article:
"Former Sen. Bob Kerrey of Nebraska, an Obama supporter, writes in The New York Post, 'a hypocrite is a person who puts on a false appearance of virtue -- who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings. And that, it seems to me, is what we are doing now.'"
What on earth are the liberal duo addressing? They seem to be upset that Mr. Obama "Promised" to accept public financing and then reneged when he realized there was more money to be made in the traditional manner which he had earlier promised to renounce and cooperate with whomever the opposition candidate may be. Keep in mind I am only reporting what Mr. Obama's supporters and friends are saying.
It is reported by Mr. McCain that the gorgeous appearance of one Sarah Palin had nothing whatsoever to do with his selection of her as his running mate.
I did read a refreshing statement from a former presidential candidate that I am passing on to you today in the hopes that you will not just take a deep breath, give a sigh and say the devil with them all. (Yes, I did tone down the last phrase). Certainly the politician dates back a ways.
"I hope I shall always possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an 'honest man.'"
This statement was made by George Washington in a letter to Alexander Hamilton, August 28, 1788.
Honesty.
Often mouthed, seldom practiced.
Honesty is such a rare quality that it was of paramount importance in the selection of leaders in the early church as witnessed by Acts 6:3:
"Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business." The question for today's article is not about Mr. Obama or Mr. McCain; the question concerns you and your commitment to "Honesty in all things."
