1 John 2:2 - “And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.” – Scripture taken from the New King James Version. Copyright 1982 by Thomas Nelson, Inc. Used by permission. All rights reserved.
Propitiation – “To appease the wrath of God so that his justice and holiness will be satisfied and he can forgive sin. Propitiation does not make God merciful; it makes divine forgiveness possible. An atonement must be provided; in OT times, animal sacrifices, now, the death of Christ for man’s sin. Through Christ’s death propitiation is made for man’s sin.” – The Strongest Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible (Nave's Topical Bible Reference System). 2001 by Zondervan.
A comforting salve is “propitiation” to the deeply scarred eardrums of the sin-filled soul. Marred by hard-struck lashes of condemnation from the voice of Satan during the years of wandering through the barren wilderness of sin, strength now failing, one hears a voice calling, “Come to Me, and I will give you rest.” The lonely soul wonders, “Did I imagine the voice,” as he cries aloud for mercy. Straight ahead he catches a vision of Someone in the distance and questions if his eyes are cruelly punishing him. He stumbles his way forward, hope deteriorating, as he calls out, “Help me, please! Whoever You are!” Suddenly the sinner is face to face with Glory as Christ Jesus reveals Himself, “Let Me heal your wounds and carry your burdens.” The Savior opens wide His arms. “Yes, LORD, save me please” the man weeps as he collapses into the strength of the LORD’S carriage. Gently, Christ wraps His loving arms around the wanderer and quietly whispers, “You’re forgiven.” “But how, my LORD,” he asks in doubt. The Savior pulls back slightly and fear strikes the man’s lips, “Don’t leave me, please!” “Oh My child, I will never leave you. As I said, you are forgiven,” Jesus kindly responds as He gestures to the scar in His hand and then stretches it out to touch the saved man’s soul. “Propitiation,” He whispers. “But. . .” the unsettled believer begins to question. “Propitiation,” the LORD replies more firmly. Defeated, Condemnation flees as one final time Christ Jesus stretches out His hands covering the ears of the sinner-converted-Saint and confirms, “I AM the Propitiation for your sin.” Encouragement: Is Condemnation standing outside the door of your heart today screaming insults? Speak faith aloud, “Propitiation – look it up in the Word of Truth, Satan!” And then offer worship to the Most High for His “indescribable gift.” Supporting Scriptures: Joshua 1:5-9 Romans 8:1-4 Romans 10:8-13
