Adonikom:
Lord of the Rising
"And the LORD said, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he
is indeed flesh. . . " (Genesis 6:3)
The problem with God today is that He whispers instead of hollers. It wasn't always that way. In Old Bible days, He thundered instructions and sent Prophets to speak for Him. His people fearfully listened for a while, and then usually returned to whatever they had been doing.
Competition between God’s barely heard Voice saying, “Not now, wait!" and man's spirit, is keen. The Lord God told Abraham and Sarah they would have a son in their old age. The "not now" was smothered by their personal desire to make it happen.
King David, almost always prayed before major decisions. Whenever he neglected to conference with the Lord, he and Israel suffered. For example, between campaigns to cleanse God's enemies from the Promised Land, David and Nathan his Prophet, were resting in David's new home. "Nathan, here I am living in a new cedar house, while the Ark of God is in a tent in the desert," David mused. He never mentioned building a house for the Ark, but Prophet Nathan, sensing his thoughts, encouraged him to do whatever he had in mind. That was a mistake.
That night Nathan got a Word from the Lord for David (2 Samuel 7:1-17; 1 Chronicles 17:1-15). Paraphrased, the message was, "David, you must not build a house for me. I never wanted one and I never asked anyone in the past to build one. I am not asking for one now. If I want a house built, you are not the person to do it. After you are dead and buried, when I am ready, I will pick one of your offspring to build a House for my Name. I will be his Father and he will be my son. When he sins, I will punish him with the rod and blows of men, but I will never take my love away from him, and his rule will be forever.”
In simple words, David was told by his boss (God) NOT to do something. David understood the Word brought through Nathan. He prayed, thanked and praised God. (2 Samuel 18-29). However, as time passed, caught up in daily activity, his personal desire grew stronger. I can imagine David’s thinking: "Oh, I see, I am not to build a house for my Lord. Hmmmmm. . . But the Word said nothing about planning, designing, funding, or getting supplies, equipment and people to work and furnish it when my heir is ready to build.
David erroneously applied the Prophet’s Word about a son (2 Samuel 7:12) to Solomon. David might have thought; “The Word of the Lord said, ‘I will preserve an offspring of your body’. . . that must mean Solomon. Yeah! that's it! My son Solomon is the offspring who will build God’s House. I owe God for all that He has done for me. I have a job to do for the Lord, get out of my way." David, although truly loving the Lord God, raised Solomon to believe he was the chosen, appointed, anointed man to build house for the Lord God. But God, through the Prophet Nathan, was referring to Jesus, our Redeemer. (Acts 7:43-49)
Poor David! Poor Solomon! The Lord of Rising, the Adonikom(1)-that controlling urge within all humanity - wrestled with and overcame the Lord's clear Word: "Listen David...AFTER you are dead and buried I will choose someone. I . . . ME . . . the YHWH (Lord) God...will pick someone. NOT YOU!
Years later, David was bedridden, old, sick and thought to be dying, Bathsheba and Prophet Nathan conspired to have him appoint Solomon king, to save their own lives. (1 Kings 1:11-27). This appointment was contrary to the Word spoken through Nathan years earlier. David might have explained it like this: "I heard what you said many years ago, Lord, but I got busy (doing your work); then I was sick and forgot exactly what you told me; then my best friend and my wife were threatened; Lord, I was losing control of everything so I had to do something."
The Lord might have answered, "Well, David, that's not exactly what I told you to do. If you had left things alone, I would have taken care of the problems, like you know I always do. I love you, and I know you love me. You've always been a loyal follower. You've done most things the way I wanted. So, I will forgive your misunderstanding of my orders . . . again. But there will be unhappy consequences. Confidentially, David, you are delaying my plan of salvation. What am I to do with the people I created? I gave them free will. Now I have to work around and through your mistakes and rebellion. BUT…remember, you do, too! I'll be here when you need me. Just call on my Name."
David and Abraham both wrestled with the Spirit of God at important points in their lives. The result is Ishmael, Israel and continuous battle over an unwanted physical temple in Jerusalem. (… But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple) Revelation 22
The Prophet Elijah expected and got fire, ill-omened clouds, lightning-filled skies, and thundering messages of doom for frightened, momentarily attentive people. His hearers thought, "If we get rid of this guy who brings noise and fearsome exhibits, we can continue doing what we want." Frightened, Elijah fled into the desert hoping to die. He was found by an angel and led to Mount Horeb, where a Voice spoke to him:
"Go out, and stand on the mountain before the LORD." And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle (cloak) and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. (1 Kings 19:9-13)
Elijah's Word for you and me: don't expect God to holler. He did once at Sinai, with Moses, to get our attention. Now He whispers to each of us in a still, small Voice. When we allow Jesus to suppress the Lord of Rising, that controlling urge in ourselves, we can hear Him and do His Will. Then future generations will call us blessed.
