With a loud crash, it came tumbling down. The boy picked it up and looked at it in dismay. There was a nasty dent at the back of the guitar. What would his dad say? That he had been careless yet again. He wondered whether there was any way of repairing the instrument. One thing was sure, it would never sound the same again...
This guitar had been lovingly created years before by a craftsman totally dedicated to his art and he had produced something quite exceptional with this particular one. Anyone hearing it could confirm this.
One day, a man came into the shop wishing to buy a guitar for his son who was showing promising musical talents. He bought the guitar as a birthday gift. However after a few lessons, the boy gave up and wanted to try something else. The guitar was left in a corner of the room gathering dust. A few months later, the boy took it to a music shop and sold it to get some pocket money.
The shop owner recognized the value of the instrument and the boy got a good price for it. A woman walked into the shop one day looking for a second-hand guitar. The shop owner showed her the guitar and warmly recommended it to her. She went home with it all excited and eager to start learning how to play. However, she did not have time for proper lessons. She thought she would learn by herself with the help of friends and a book for beginners. She found she had even less time (and hardly any self-discipline) to teach herself.
Once again, the guitar was left in the corner of a room gathering dust. Until someone came along wishing to buy a guitar. It was sold once again. The new owner asked a guitarist friend to change the strings and tune it before he could start his lessons. That is when the accident happened. The guitarist friend decided to get his friend a new one and to attempt some kind of repair on the beautiful damaged one…
A couple of days later, Brother Emmanuel (from the old peoples' home) phoned him and asked him whether he knew anyone who had a guitar which was not being used!!! He told Bro. Emmanuel about this particular guitar and the brother wanted it in spite of the damage.
Finally, the guitar found its way to the home and now brings much joy to the old people there whenever Bro. Emmanuel picks it up to play and sing with them. Despite its earlier damage, it still renders a beautiful sound and helps people bring glory to God! At long last, it is fulfilling the purpose for which it had been created.
Just like this guitar, the talents that the Lord gives us are left unused and just gather dust in a corner of our lives. Due to lack of perseverance, carelessness, no self-discipline or plain laziness, we keep saying ‘no’ to God’s call to grow. How the Master Craftsman’ must grieve to see so many of His instruments laid to waste! Or maybe we feel broken, ‘damaged’ by life’s hurts and feel useless, yet God is able to transform our mere existence into meaningful lives.
Lord, forgive me for being reluctant to surrender to You.
Lord, change me into a joyful instrument in Your loving hands.
