Matthew 19:26 NASB
And looking at them Jesus said to them,
“With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
A young rich man once asked Jesus what must he do to have eternal life. Jesus told him to obey the commandments. The young man replied that he had kept the commandments since his youth. Jesus knew it was impossible for the young man to keep all the commandments. He could have told the young man that good works does not give him eternal life. He will expressed his true faith by obeying the commandments. Jesus lovingly showed him instead. He told the young man to sell all of his possessions and follow Him. A look of pain came across the young man's face. He immediately dropped his head and walked away. He could not face the thought of giving away his wealth. He was so attached to it. He was so secured by it. However, he did not know that he was in bondage to his wealth. His money was the god he worshiped. He turned down the eternal treasure in heaven in order to keep the temporal treasure on earth. Jesus was concerned about the relationship the young man had with his wealth not the money itself.
How often have you allowed possessions to take God's place? Allow me to confess that I have allowed things to take God's place in my life. Even though I do not have the riches that this young man had, I still allowed God to be second. Recently, God has shown me what place my career had in my life. I have faith in God for eternal life, but I did not have faith in Him to provide for my daily needs. Therefore, I thought I had to depend on my job. However, I was faced with having to make a decision: following God's law or man's law. I almost compromised my values because I was afraid to stand up for what I believed in . The company I work for wanted to sell a product that will endanger lives. Even though it is legal by man's law, by God's law it is not right. However, I took a stand and refused to sell the product. Now my job is in jeopardy, however by the grace of God I am still there. Therefore, I have learned to not worry about what will happen if I stand up for God. Even though I may lose my job, did God give me that job anyway? If He gave me this job, I believe He can give me a better one. In the Bible, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stood firm for God's law and He took care of them. I know He will take care of me, too.
Can you say the same thing? Do you believe God will take care of you no matter what you are facing? I ask you now, who is the god of your life? Are you willing to give up whatever is taking God's place in your life?
Dear Heavenly Father,
Forgive us for not trusting You. Forgive us for not believing that You can and will take care of us. Remind us that nothing is impossible for You, and if we have to give up our possessions to keep Your laws, You will take care of us. Only You can save us. We cannot save ourselves. Thank You. Amen.
