Judgment Stones
Who are you to judge someone else's servant? To his own master he stands or falls. And he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand. (Romans 14:4)
Why are we so quick to judge another’s servant? Are we judging people by what they wear, where they live, or what they drive? When a person tells us someone is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, do we pass this label on, or do we make that decision ourselves after weighing the evidence? The rumor mills are killing Christian soldiers at an alarming rate.
Steven, when he was being stoned by the unrighteous crowd had good reason to judge these people, but elected to forgive rather than to condemn. (Acts 7) It all started with one stone and escalated into a feeding frenzy. Are we throwing unsubstantiated stones because our neighbor’s are? Have we elevated ourselves above the throne of judgment?
Stones were a real part of the Hebrew culture; they were used in judgment for life and death situations. The Urim and Thummim were stones of judgment spoken of in the bible (Ex 28:30). The high priest uses these stones to seek the Lord’s will on any given matter and they resided in the breastplate above the high priest heart. Stones were also used as a death sentence for adultery and blasphemy.
Everyday the enemy is going to present someone before us for judgment and he’s going to paints a convincing picture of their guilt. He knows when we pass judgment on others we bring judgment on ourselves, and with the same measure we use, it will be poured out on us (Matt 7:1,2).
Today the stones we throw aren’t earthen; they are malicious fabrications of truth, birthed in anger and spewed out in hatred. Our words have the power of life and death, they can encourage and bring forth a harvest or they can be a blazing inferno consuming the harvesters. The stones of judgment are lying all around us; it’s our choice whether to pick them up and cast them or to forgive and leave them lay.
