The World’s Greatest Catcher
A Daily Devotional by Matt Thompson
Psalm 71
5 O Lord, you alone are my hope.
I’ve trusted you, O Lord, from childhood.
6 Yes, you have been with me from birth;
from my mother’s womb you have cared for me.
No wonder I am always praising you!
Each spring, after the snow had melt and the ground had thawed, my younger brother Mike and I would dig out our gloves and start to prepare for a new season of baseball. I was always the pitcher thus making him the catcher by default. We would practice countless hours in hopes of becoming the next baseball hero.
There are two years that separate my brother and I, but because of how our birthdays fell on the calendar, we were able to play on the same team every other year through farm league, little league and pony league. I would request that my brother catch on the nights that I pitched. Not because he was my brother, but because I was comfortable with him and we knew each others abilities and weakness. We were a match made in heaven. Mike always did a great job of getting the mitt on the ball no matter how wild my pitch might be; He always made me look good. Mike was a great catcher.
On the morning of January 23, 2007, I found myself praising God for all that He does. My wife took a call at 6:30am from my mother informing us that my brother Mike and his wife Carrie welcomed a new gift from God. In of itself this is great news, but what is more amazing is the manner of which God brought this new life into the world. At 5:07am, alongside the very dark and cold highway of US31, in the backseat of a Volvo, halfway between Manistee and Traverse City and with my brother Mike once again as a catcher. I praise God for letting there be a cell phone signal in the middle of nowhere, I praise God for the guidance of the 911 dispatcher, I praise God for the paramedics that showed up two minutes after the delivery and I praise God for keeping Mike and Carrie calm as they shared God’s Glory in the gift of Eowyn Christine Thompson coming into this world.
Events like this make it easy to praise God for what He does in our lives. I must continue to remember that the Lord is alone my hope in all that happens in life; the good with the bad. That He is with us always, even on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. No wonder I am always praising you!

In a word? Delightful; such a grand illustration that is well written. We call them anecdotes, but the bible calls them "parables", Hey, you are sounding just like someone else I know! Good job!
