I am Thirsty
Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty” A Jar of wine vinegar was there, they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips when He has received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished. With that, He bowed His head and gave up his spirit. (John 19:28-30 N.I.V)
Apostle John has very truly told us in above quotation that Jesus was thirsty. Following betrayal, arrest, desertion, false trials, denial, condemnation, beatings and mockery, Jesus was required to carry His cross to Golgotha (the place of the skull) where he was crucified. Water present in His body has rinsed. To fulfill the need of the body He said “I am thirsty.”
In Roman times crucifixion was an act of execution in which the victim was nailed to cross. Heavy wrought iron nails were driven through the wrist and at the heal bones, if the life of the victim linger too long death was hastened by breaking his legs. Only slaves, the beast of criminals and offenders who were not Roman citizens were executed in this manner. First century authors describe the agony and disgrace of being crucified. Having such agony Jesus was sure to say that “I am thirsty.”
The other three authors of Gospels have given an account of offering drink on the way to Golgotha; Jesus refused to drink customarily offered the pain killing narcotic liquid traditionally given to prisoners who were crucified, because He wanted to be fully conscious until his death to remain faithful to Father to fulfill the scripture and taught us not to accept easiness in life but to face obstacles courageously or no short cuts on the way to achieve the goal.
Going through an ordeal, it is natural demand of the flesh to feel thirst. Jesus being perfect man has to fulfill the natural demand of His body and said on cross “I am thirsty.”
This is what Jesus taught us from His cross at Calvary. Let’s look the following verses from Gospel of John and Revelation.
But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to the eternal life. (John 4:14 N.I.V.)
Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never thirsty”
(John 6:35 N.I.V.)
On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice “If anyone is thirsty, let his come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him. (John 7:37-38 N.I.V)
The spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life. (Revelation 22:17)
In above four extracts Jesus is teaching the human beings to come and believe in Him and take the free gift of eternal Life, during His ministry of the earth. Since the man committed his first sin in the Garden of Eden. He had only one wish to get back to Garden of Eden and live an eternal life in the presence of God the Father. As hard the man tried more hard Satan pushed him back to the valley of death. Lord God the Father in His eternal love and faithfulness kept on sending Prophets and messengers to help man change his sinfulness. But man did not pay any heed. As a plan God decided to take up flesh to help man to reconcile. Above quotations are parts of plan to teach man to leave sin and put on righteousness to receive free gift of eternal life. This is what Jesus Christ kept on teaching in His ministry on earth. “Who ever drinks the water I give will never thirst, Indeed the water I give him will become a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
Now question arises what thirst did Jesus Christ has on the Cross? What I want to share in Lord our God the Father is that Jesus our Savior has two different thirsts. One was the need of body or physical thirst as He is real man the other was the need of the spirit or spirit or spiritual thirst as He is real God. Bodily thirst we had discussed already. Now we need to understand the spiritual thirst, the Lamb of God had had on the Cross. Jesus was really very thirsty.
Jesus has thirst to save people from their sins. (Mat. 1: 12)
Jesus has thirst to proclaim freedom from prison. (Luk. 4: 18)
Jesus was thirsty to teach people to remain faithful
To the point of death. (Rev. 2: 10)
Jesus has thirst to fulfill the scripture. (Mar. 14: 49)
Jesus has thirst to swallow up death in victory. (1Cor 15:45)
Jesus was thirsty to guide our feet into path of peace (Luk. 1: 79)
Jesus has thirst to call us out of darkness into his,
Wonderful light. (1Pet. 2: 9)
Jesus was thirsty to seek and save, what was lost. (Luk. 19: 10)
Jesus was thirsty to do the will of His Father. (Mat. 26: 42)
Jesus was thirsty to give us eternal life. (Joh. 3: 15)
Jesus was thirsty to reconcile us with God. (Rom. 5: 10)
Lord Jesus Christ has many, many more spiritual thirst. Our mortal mind can think only this much. To quench the physical or bodily thirst he sipped wine vinegar and said “It is finished” with that he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. Now question is has the spiritual thirst of Jesus Christ been quenched? Have we given the wine vinegar of our upright deeds and acts and behavior to Jesus Christ? To say, “It is finished”. Are we playing our part in the fulfillment of the scripture?
Dear followers of Lord Jesus Christ rise to occasion to let savior come down from the cross. He needs the wine and vinegar of holy, peace and loving acts from us, as He has taught us practically in his ministry on the earth. As we give Him the wine vinegar of our services to humanity and give testimony for the wonderful things He is doing in our lives every day. He will receive them and will joyfully say, It is finish. My Children are doing needful, for what, I had taken my ministry on the earth. Our Lord wants us to take the “free gift of the water of life” to every living soul. Jesus Christ is asking us from His cross to bring all who are thirsty, and let them drink, so that the stream of living water flow from with in them. This is the message of the cross that I am the bread of Life and spring of the water. Jesus Christ needs to use our words and deeds to carry good news of living water becoming a spring of water welling up to eternal life.
Failing this, our Lord will remain spiritually hanging on the cross, as we have read above “when he had received the drink Jesus said, “It is finished” with that he bowed his head and gave up his spirit”. Would you let your Savior Jesus Christ be hanging on the cross? Let us make a promise sincerely in our hearts as it is said in Luke 9:23 ”Then He said to them all, ”If anyone would come after me” he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me”
O! Lord help us to work for you and to take up our cross daily for you. God the Father help us to join hands to promote Your eternal Love and faithfulness on the earth to let you say “It is finished” and let You bow down Your Head.
