Grief
Comforting the Little Ones
And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter,
that He may abide with you for ever.
John 14:16
A year had past since Kyle, Kassie and Alyssa’s “papa-grandma” (their father’s mother) had passed away. Sorrowful memories and feelings were still surfacing.
The months before her passing had been stricken with sadness. Each visit felt like it could be the last one. Papa-grandma would hug each little one and remind them of her love and the Father’s gentle care of them. The days following her battle with cancer and her subsequent death were bitter days for the children. Kyle and Kassie loved papa-grandma so tenderly. With tear-filled eyes, my own heart ached as I listened to them share their grief and fears.
Now a year had gone by. The sting had lessened somewhat, but the sorrow remained deep and raw within their hearts. Their daddy, Rod, wished to take the children to papa-grandma’s graveside. “We’ll go together,“ Daddy comforted, “and remember papa-grandma for a few minutes.” Kyle and Kassie determined to have brave spirits, although they were assured it would be fine if they cried. Jesus stays right beside them in their sadness, Mama told them.
It turned out to be a difficult time as the little family held hands together and prayed to Jesus for His grace to wrap around them. Kyle shook with sad memory sobs. Kassie held her tears for a few minutes and then hers also spilled forth. Rod, through his own grief, held his children close and offered the Father’s comfort.
That evening at bedtime, their daddy laid beside with them and again prayed with them to the Father who brings comfort. Kyle and Kassie found the presence of Jesus through their parents’ tender care and soothing throughout those pain-filled days.
Situations that are filled with pain and grief are hard for little children to process. But with gentle, understanding adult hearts helping to bring comfort, their sorrows can find safe healing.
Prayer: Father God, You are the healer of all our grief. In Your presence we find the deepest level of healing. We worship You for that. Amen.
To Do: Is there sorrow in your home? Encourage your children to speak the pain in their hearts. Hold them as they cry. This will minister Christ’s presence right into their moments.
