If men did not follow men, there would never be divisions in the Body of Christ. If we all kept our eyes on Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith, we'd never be distracted and disturbed by the contrary thinking of another mere human being. Old, old problem: it troubled Paul in the Corinthian church of the first century, and has been with us ever since. We are so close to men that we are blinded by love and loyalty, but we need to keep Jesus even closer than our brethren. All eyes ought to be on Him with an overriding desire to become like Him. One's eye has to be where his aim is if one expects to hit the target. No one ever hit it aiming too low. And the more we keep our eyes on Jesus, the more like Him we become, and the less likely we are to be pulled from the track. When we let some man or group of men do our thinking, we are putting our souls in human hands and sure jeopardy. No person has a monopoly on understanding the truth. A good open honest heart searching the Scriptures will not be misled because the Spirit will guide him. The promise of seeking and finding includes the will of God for our lives. He loves us--is not willing that any should be lost, and He will honor our search for the truth.
Too often, congregational unrest results when some good and well-intentioned brother or sister begins to espouse a new revelation that depends for validity more on his or her reputation than on the Scriptures themselves. Then personality gets involved, and before you know it, sides are taken, battle lines are drawn, and all eyes are taken off Jesus and focused on themselves. Comparing ourselves with ourselves, Paul says, is not wise. Like the hapless lemmings, we follow other lemmings over the cliff to division and spiritual chaos. We ought to love each other and honor each other, but do our own thinking based on Jesus, our perfect pattern. If you cut a piece of material for a pattern, and then use the cut piece as a pattern, there is considerable variance which gets worse and worse. Error results from copyng each other. Each of us needs to refer directly to the original Perfect Pattern for our lives. No one comes to the Father but by Him.
