Letting Go

At an Oklahoma City high school, Conchita Hernando was voted by her classmates to be “The Most Likely To Succeed”. And succeed she did! An outstanding wife… A great mother… The volunteer of the year for the fifth time in ten years. And then without warning, Conchita was threatened with a nervous breakdown. She began seeking and seeing psychiatrists without finding any relief whatsoever. As a last resort, she sought the help of a priest whom she had known as a little girl. Within two visits she poured out those things that brought her to the brink of mental and physical breakdown: family demands, problems in her marriage, physical difficulties, loss of physical beauty, middle age.
“Father, I just can’t take it anymore,” Conchita said through her tears. “I feel as though I’m falling apart and at the end of my rope!”
“Good! Very well!” said the priest in a strong but firm voice, “Then let go!”
“What! What are you saying, Father?” Conchita responded in surprise.
He pointed out that in a violent storm like tornadoes or hurricanes rigid metal telephone poles will break into pieces while a willow tree can move with the high winds and survive. “Did you know that the ancient Hebraic word for spirit and wind are one and the same?” he said. “What you need to do, Conchita, is let the Holy Spirit move freely in your life. Turn your life over to God and yield to Him and let everything that is weighing you down go. You will look at life differently and be at peace.
At that moment, Conchita cried a flood of tears. It was also at that moment she let go and sought God’s help. She learned that her problems did not immediately disappear and some grand miracle occurred. Conchita found out that she could bend when problems came when she let go and sought God instead of trying to depend solely on herself and humankind alone.
