Larry Lilly’s Letter Thursday March 23, 2006
Most of the people on my email list are not evangelical Christians therefore I am often asked questions due to their unawareness of jargon, or professions within the framework of Fundamentalism or Evangelicalism.
A common question being; what is a revivalist or evangelist? In asking the question they show that they know more about the terms than do many who involved directly in one or the other callings. A revivalist is a person whom the Lord uses to revive or bring to fresh life men and women who at one time were full of vigor for the Lord and have since cooled off. The true Evangelist is a person who presents Christ in such a manner as to win converts, win souls or whatever term you use to cause people to accept Christ as savior. The preacher preaches and the Lord moves and folks are born again.
Albert Schweitzer spoke of the importance of the revivalist, though he did not use the term. In the sense that Dr. Schweitzer meant each of us can be a revivalist and certainly from time to time we need to be in touch with a revivalist.
“In everyone’s life at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.”
When you see people yawning their way through life, you know they need what The Evangelaires called a Brand New Touch, meaning a new touch from the Lord that brought renewed life, fresh fire into the spirit. An old song prays, Set My Soul Afire, Lord, Set My Soul Afire meaning a sincere prayer for the restoration of inner power to do the Lord’s work and to enjoy Jesus.
For the most part today’s world sees a combination of the Evangelist and Exhorter going from to place and being used to revive cold hearted saints to get on fire for Jesus and also calling the lost to faith in Christ. This work certainly has its place.
Yet, God uses ordinary men and women to cause those who have or are growing cold concerning Jesus to catch the fire, renew the vision and get back in the traces and do the work of the Lord with inner peace and joy.
If you feel that your inner fire needs some rekindling, get around someone who is fired up, not some raging nutcase, but someone who has the walk with Jesus that is burning, in a controlled way and giving off the warmth of a close walk with Jesus. And then, when you are as the Old Time Methodist used to say, ‘Warmed Over’ share the light and the heat with others. For the bulk of my adult life I have tried to spend time with people who are obviously keeping the fire burning in their heart and in associating with them, knowing the fire will spread to me. In turn I hope to touch someone’s life, even today.
Through prayer and study you hang around with Jesus and He keeps the fire going.
