“What? Where am I?” Blinking his eyes in the bright light, he sees for the first time. All around him there are signs, huge machines, loud noises and what’s this? Row upon row of other round objects that looked just like him! The signs read “Acme Baseballs”. Figuring that’s what he was, the baseball tried talking to the other baseballs around him, but none of the others could talk or see. They all just sat there like rocks. It seemed as if he were created with an understanding that the others did not have. “Hmm,” Baseball thought, “this feels lonely with no one else to talk to.”
Suddenly Baseball felt like he was moving! His whole row was moving! “I wonder where we’re going,” he said, even though he no one could hear him. He could see the other baseballs disappearing, one at a time, down at the end of the row. “This could be fun”, he thought, “but a little scary too.” It was almost his turn, he tried not to be scared, but then it was his turn and, he couldn’t help it! PLOP! He had fallen off the end of the row and into a small box. “Well, at least it has a window on one side so I can look out and see where I’m going,” he said.
The baseball found himself joined up with the others, except they were all now in their own small boxes. He was moving again. This time all the baseballs were being put into a larger box. When he was put in, there were baseballs under him, on both sides and even on top of him. “This could be cozy,” he thought. But then the top of the box was closed and it was very dark. “Now I really wish there was another baseball to talk too,” he said sadly. But, the darkness and the warmth inside the box had made him sleepy, so he decided to go to sleep and just wait to see what happened next.
It seemed like he was in this box forever! Day after day of just waiting, he sang songs to himself and slept. He felt he should be gathering his strength for something, but he wasn’t sure what it was so he decided to see if he could move around in his little box. “Hey! I can bounce!” he said happy for something else to do. His days now filled with bouncing and singing; the lonely little baseball made the best of where he was. At night, he found himself dreaming of laughing boys with uniforms and helmets on, baseball bats, mitts and him flying through the air. He loved those dreams and he loved the feeling of flying through the air.
Finally, the large box that he was living in was moving! Baseball was so excited! He couldn’t wait to see what was happening! Then, the top of the box was opening! Light! At last the little baseball would be able to see where he was going! When he was finally lifted out of the box, he found himself in a room where a man was putting him and the others like him on a shelf. The man placed baseball on the shelf so that he could see the rest of the room. There were bats, helmets, bases, jackets and uniforms stacked all around the room. There was also a desk, where the man sat. When he wasn’t talking with other people, the man whistled fun little songs. It was a great day for the little baseball. After a while, the man turned all the lights off, closed the door and was gone. That was okay with baseball, though, because he was really tired after such an exciting day of moving. He slept for a long time, again, dreaming of flying.
He woke up early in the morning and decided this would be the best time to do his bouncing, in case that man came back. He bounced and bounced, feeling himself getting stronger all the time. When the man opened the door and turned on all the lights, baseball was happy just to sit and watch everything that was going on in the room. Baseball stayed on that shelf all through the winter. He was able to see out the small window in the office, and he liked to watch the rain and then the snow outside. This helped to make his days more enjoyable.
As the snows began to melt and stay gone, Baseball began to hear birds singing outside and he wished he could go outside with them. Then one day, the man came and looked right at Baseball! Baseball could hardly believe he was getting the attention of the man, and he could hardly hold in his excitement when the man reached up and took him off the shelf. The man took some more baseballs off the shelf, too, and placed them all on his desk.
What the man did next was a total shock to the lonely baseball. He opened the box and took Baseball out! The man rubbed Baseball in his hands over and over again. Wow, he had never been touched by anyone before! Then the man tossed Baseball up into the air and caught him a second later. It kind of reminded him of all his dreams he had about flying, but not quite. Baseball was then put on the desk while the man opened the rest of the boxes, putting the other baseballs on the desk, too. Baseball wanted to shout out to the whole world how happy he was to be out of that box, especially when he saw the man throw all the empty boxes into the trashcans!
Baseball watched as the man grabbed a heavy, white bag and placed all the baseballs inside it. They landed with a thump and were all piled on top of each other. The man then pulled on two big strings and the bag closed up tight. “Rats,” Baseball thought, “Now I can’t see anything!” Baseball soon heard voices talking excitedly about the new season that was starting. Then somebody picked up the bag of baseballs and left the office.
There was a lot of bumping around inside that sack, but baseball was too excited to be scared. Baseball loved the sounds of being outside; he just had to believe that soon he would be able to see the outside. Finally, the moving and bumping stopped with a thump and the bag was opened. A large hand reached into the bag and removed Baseball! Again, he found himself being rubbed and tossed into the air! Best of all, he could hear and see everything that was going on!
Pretty soon, Baseball was being thrown back and forth between several men. “This is the closest thing to flying yet!” Baseball thought. One man in particular was always handling him. Every time this man, who they called, “The Pitcher,” threw Baseball to someone else, Baseball was always thrown back, back and forth, back and forth. Sometimes, The Pitcher would throw Baseball toward a man holding a bat. And sometimes, “The Batter” would hit Baseball with the bat and he would fly through the air.
Baseball loved the flying part the most, but he was still lonely. Though Baseball was played with and thrown around and even sometimes hit, so were the other baseballs – he was no different than any of the others. At night he was thrown back into the bag, which was closed up tight and tossed into a dark, smelly closet. He wished he could be special to someone!
Then one day, Baseball was pulled out of the bag and went to play the game as he had done many times before. This time, however, when The Batter hit him, Baseball flew, and flew and flew. “This is just like my dreams!” Baseball thought. Baseball saw himself flying over all the players on the field, toward the wall that was always so far away. A home run! Baseball had always heard about homeruns from The Batters, but it was never his turn to be a home run, until now! Baseball felt that he could fly forever!
Just as he thought that, phwump, someone caught him! “How can that be?” cried Baseball, “I saw myself flying over all the heads of the players!” Just then Baseball noticed that it was a lady that had caught him. She was screaming and jumping up and down and someone was pulling on her arm! “What was happening?” Baseball wondered. Then Baseball realized that the lady had a small boy with her and he was the one pulling on her arm and screaming louder and calling her “Mom”. Then she handed Baseball to the boy she called “Ben”. “Here Ben,” Mom said, “This baseball is for you, so that you will always remember our time here!” Ben was so excited he grabbed Baseball out of her hands and hugged it tightly to his chest! “Aw-right!” said Ben, “My very own baseball!”
Baseball was still a little confused. Anyone who had ever caught him before always returned him to The Pitcher, but Mom said Ben could keep him for himself. Did that mean that Baseball was going to belong to just this boy? It appeared to be so, because everyone around Ben congratulated him and told him what a lucky boy he was! Baseball could barely believe his eyes and ears, but there he stayed, right in Ben’s hands through the rest of the game! When Mom and Ben left the stadium, Baseball felt sure that he really was going to belong to this boy.
Baseball was taken home with Ben and the played with him everyday! He finally felt like he belonged, like this is was what he was made for! He was loved and held and he even got to sleep on the pillow next to Ben’s head each night! Every day was new and exciting and after awhile, Baseball realized that he wasn’t lonely anymore.
