Aimee's analogy for today is cars, men and long- term relationships. No, I'm not a car buff but I learned an important lesson when I went shopping for my first car.
My mom had been in a car accident and was not severely injured (Thank God!) but the car was totaled. Needless to say, it was very frustrating not having a car and having to depend on others for rides to and from work. My aunt and uncle were great though and I really appreciate all they did. My uncle went car shopping with me. It was a very extremely frustrating experience for me. I had a very limited budget and could only afford so much a month. I didn't realize it would be so difficult finding a decent used car. We went to a number of car dealers and told them what I could afford monthly and so they showed us the cars they had that fit my budget. My uncle seemed to find something wrong with all of them, be it too many miles, rust, transmission etc. etc.. After a couple of days of looking, I got so frustrated that at one point I said, "I just want a car." My uncle looked at me and said, "Don't take that attitude, you don't know what you'll end up with."
My uncle was trying to protect me from making a bad investment. How much more is God trying to protect us when choosing a lifelong mate! How many times have you possibly said, "I just want a husband/wife" and then settle for the first guy/girl that shows interest in you? How many times have you seen people settle for someone that may not be right for him/her?
I'm a woman, so when car shopping I see the color and exterior and whether it looks good or not. My uncle dug deeper into the engine and saw whether it would last me the whole time I was paying for it. In dating relationships, all we see is the outside and possible show or act put on to impress us, but you know what? God digs deeper into the heart. He knows the guys/girls intentions, and motives and if he/she will last you the long haul and be there when times get tough.
When uncertain, ask God if this is the right guy/girl for you. He loves you more than anyone. God is trying to protect you from possible heartache involved, just as my uncle was trying to protect me from buying a lemon.
Trust Him. I'm thirty years old, still single and praying for that right guy to come along. Do I at times find myself saying, "I just want a husband"? Yes, I do but then I think about ugly divorces and bitter breakups and relationships gone bad. I just continue to trust God and wait on his perfect timing.
Oh yea, the car, a 1993 Buick Century has lasted me for six years now with no major repairs (yet). Don't settle for a lemon!! Let God dig into the engine (heart) and if He's not satisfied, don't settle!
