Eddy Eagle
Part 3
The next day Eddy watched closely when the man came to clean the cage and feed them. He watched how the
big gate was unlatched, because he wanted to have another adventure. As soon as the man was gone Eddy climbed
up the side of the cage by holding on with his feet. He would reach up with one foot then hold on with that foot while
he reached up with the other one. Finely he reached the latch. While holding on with his feet he worked at the latch
with his beak. It took a while, but he did it. About that time a big puff of wind blew the gate open. Eddy was free
again, what fun he was going to have.
There were no cats or dogs around so Eddy hopped over to the dog food and checked it out. Yuck, that stuff was
terrible. Looking around he saw a ball and went to check it out. When he reached out to peck the ball, it rolled
away. That was fun, Eddy chased the ball all over the yard.
All at once Ella began to squawk, a huge cat was in the cage. Ella was afraid of him but Eddy remembered the
other cat running from him; so he hurried to the cage. He hopped into the cage, spread his wings as far as he could
and began to scream and flap his wings. Eddy hopped and hollered and flapped his wings. The big cat just looked at
him and growled, Eddy jumped, flapped and hollered some more. The cat turned and walked away shaking his
head. I think the noise hurt his ears. Eddy was tired now but couldn't close the gate. Luckily Old Spot came by at
that time to check on all the noise. Eddy said " Do you know how to close the gate, Ella is afraid of that cat?" "Sure"
said Spot as he pushed it shut. Eddy was really tired by the time the latch was back in place.
Eddy was awake when the sun came up the next day. He felt like a walk before the man came to feed them.
He begged and begged Ella to go with him, but she wouldn't go. She was afraid of the other animals. Eddy told her
he would take care of her . "The ball is a lot of fun Ella." He said. "I'll just watch" Ella said.
Eddy worked the latch up then hollered at old Spot "Come help me Spot." The old dog slowly got up and walked
over to the gate. He reached up with his paw and pulled the gate open, Eddy hopped out, then Spot pushed it closed
so the cat would not bother Ella. "Watch out for the black cat, he is a mean one" Spot said as he went back to his
bed.
Eddy stretched his wings, he liked to practice flapping them since it was so helpful in scaring the cat away. He
happened to look up and there above him was a very large bird, soaring above the trees. Eddy didn't know it, but
that was his father keeping an eye on him.
As he watched, the eagle called to him "come fly with me". Eddy wished he could, that looked like a lot of fun. Eddy
tried to call back but could only make a squawk. He called back to Ella "Did you see that bird, that is what I want
to be Ella."
Eddy was so busy watching the eagle, he failed to see the house door open and the man come out. Spot barked
a warning but it was too late. The man saw him out of his cage. "Well Eddy I see You managed to get out, I guess
you are ready to go to school. Ella might as well go too." Eddy was put back into the cage and the gate was locked
this time, but Eddy noticed he forgot the little door.
Ella was mad at Eddy now, she did not want to go anywhere, especially to school. She felt safe in the cage. She
squawked and squawked at Eddy. He was tired of being blamed for her problems.
He called to Spot "what is school, is it fun, Spot?" "Never went to this school, I was trained before I came here"
Spot said "I hear it can be fun, you have to work hard and you learn a lot of things." "That big yellow bus you ride
on, will be by here in a minute. Just watch for it."
Well I don't want to go to school. I will just run away. Eddy thought to himself as he climbed to the little door and
began to work on the latch. Spot couldn't reach this high so he couldn't help. Eddy finely got the latch open, then he
hung on with his foot and pushed with his beak until the door opened. He climbed out , then pushed the gate closed
so the cat would not get in. Spot had watched all this. Now he said "What are you going to do now Eddy?" "I'm
running away from this place." Eddy grumbled. "Mind if I go?" Spot asked. "Guess not." Eddy said. Spot knew
Eddy would need help before he had gone far.
" Bye, Ella see you when I learn to fly." "Don't go Eddy, I don't want to go to school alone." Ella said. But Eddy
didn't listen.
Eagles are made to fly and Eddy soon grew tired, it was a lot of work for him to hop along. His wings begin to
drag on the ground. Spot stopped and said "Climb on Eddy, you can ride a while." So the young eagle rode on the
old dogs' back. It was a very unusual sight. "Eddy what are you going to eat? I am too old to catch rabbits for you."
Eddy was still a little mad, "I don't need food" he said. But Spot heard his stomach growl, he knew better. When
they came to a stream, Spot said "lets get a drink". A little later they came to a road and right in the middle was a
dead rabbit. Eddy was hungry after all. Spot let him eat his fill, and then all at once they heard a roar and over the hill
came a huge truck. Eddy had eaten so much he could not move fast, Spot grabbed him in his mouth and jumped out
of the road, just in time for the truck to miss them. It was a close call.
The two friends just lay there a while, then they heard a piercing cry above them; looking up they saw a streak
diving toward them. The eagle landed just a few feet away. "Are you O.K. Eddy?" he asked. "Yes, but how did you
know my name?" "I am your father Eddy" the eagle said. "What are you doing out here alone?" "I'm not alone,
Spot is with me." Eddy said. "He saved me from the monster." Eddy did not know what the truck was, to him it was
a monster. "I am running away from the cage the man put me in. He said me and Ella would have to go to school."
"Do you tell me you left your sister alone and ran away to keep from going to school?" "You have to go back Eddy,
I will be watching over you. School is good, you will learn things you need to know. A dumb eagle will never be a
Super Eagle. The cage will keep you safe while you grow. Now you go back right now!"
Once again they headed out but Spot was tired, he was old and he had not eaten all day, he needed rest. Finely he
stopped , "I have to rest Eddy" he said. He lay down and fell asleep as soon as his eyes closed. Eddy wasn't tired or
hungry, he decided it was time he helped his friend. Off he went, he hadn't gone far when he met a coyote. He just
knew this was a friendly dog of some kind, so before the he coyote grabbed him he said "Say, I need some help for
my friend. He is an old dog and he has been helping me and needs some food. Do you know where I could get
some?" Now coyotes love to eat dogs for some reason. This one decided a dog would be better than a bunch of
feathers, so he said "Sure you just lead the way and I'll call my friend to bring some food." Eddy was overjoyed, he
turned and hopped as fast as he could back to Spot.
In the mean time the coyote called his friends and said "dog feast". They all stopped what they were doing and
headed out. Old Spot had heard the call too. Looking around he didn't see Eddy then out he came from the bushes.
Spot yelled "Eddy, where have you been the coyotes are coming to eat us. We have to hurry." "But Spot they are
bringing you some food." Eddy said. "Eddy, Coyotes don't feed dogs, they eat them. Now get on my back, we'll
make a run for it." Just as Eddy climbed on the coyotes showed up. They would have to fight.
Then a piercing scream caused them all to look up, Father eagle shot down from the sky like a rocket, right on top
of the biggest coyote. The sharp talons and beak of the powerful eagle soon had the coyotes yelping and running for
cover. This was not what they had in mind at all.
Father flew off and soon came back and dropped a rabbit in front of Spot. Spot barked 'Thanks' and began to
eat.
Father eagle looked at Eddy and said "stay with Spot and go back with him, I don't want to hear any complaints
about school or the cage, you have proved you cannot take care of yourself. I will be watching, so don't worry and
stay out of trouble. Do you hear?" Eddy nodded his head, school didn't sound so bad after the coyotes. Spot
finished eating then rested a little and they began the walk back. They were both very tired by the time they arrived
and Eddy had to get in the cage somehow. Luckily the small door was still unlatched. Eddy climbed in and managed
to hook it back before falling asleep. Ella was sound asleep, oh well, he would tell her about everything tomorrow.
