(the poem)
Valley of Bones
I awoke in a valley, dark and deep
A place, where death will always creep
I laid cold and still, but not alone
Surrounded by others like me, dry bone
Unlike Ezekiel, this valley did I find
My purpose here was not of that kind
Ezekiel was there by faith, heading a call
I was there among the dry bones that fall
I was a bone, completely empty and dry
until Jehovah had Son of man prophecy
The Word he spoke was the merciful Truth
the healing power restored me to my youth
I was growing new by His Holy Grace
being restored, to finish the race
I had stopped once to take a break
and now I laid there in the sun to bake
It is far too easy to turn from God's way
so I am thankful for His mercy this day
As my bones dried and sun-scorched laid
I was redeemed by the price Jesus paid.
(the story)
About a month ago our pastor gave a lesson on Ezekiel 37 and the trip to the valley of bones. After the service the idea of "valley of dry bones" seemed to jump out at me. I remember thinking that would be a wonderful poem. I prayed and meditated on this Word for quite some time. I even mentioned the idea to friends of mine. I told them the Lord had given me an idea for a poem about "valley of bones", but He hadn't revieled the poem yet. The only other thought that came with it was waking in the valley.
For a while I thought about writing it as Ezekiel experienced it, but recently the Lord revealed the idea (lesson) about viewing it through the bones. How did the experience affect the dry and parched bones (the nation of Israel). But then I was stuck there, until Our Father revealed that it wasn't just about the people of Israel, but about all of God's children, especially the Gentiles that have come to Christ.
Tonight as we returned home from mid-week services (which was about Living Water and quenching of the thirst). I sat on the couch. I almost turned on the TV, but didn't. I almost grabbed a snack, but didn't. I grabbed paper and pen (my wife was talking to a friend on the phone).
I put the pen to paper and the first line came out. I prayed that this would be the time that Valley of Bones came together. As with all my writing it just flowed by God's grace. When it was finished I read it and I thought "Wow, that's why the wait." I don't know if this will affect you as it did me, but I must admit the lesson moved me.
Here is what it means to me. When we are not producing fruit for the Lord, then we can quickly dry up like the bones in the valley. But God's mercy can restore us and the Living Water can restore life to dry bones, that we may finish the race and produce fruit.
I know this is the most long-winded I've been in a follow-up (also first time I've used two hyphenated words in one sentence :p), but I felt led to share more than just the poem side. May this bless you as it has blessed me when the Spirit wrote it (I'm just the pen). God bless.
