Short Stories
Emerald lived in the land of Jade. She was neither a girl nor yet a woman but on the crossroads of the in between place of discovering who she could be. Emerald had bright orange hair and a few signature freckled patches that gave her some distinction, but other than that quite ordinary to look at if she sat still. But when she moved she wasn’t quite animated but usually very focused and intentional as her thoughts spilled out in her steps. You could easily see that she was angry or happy or so caught up in something that she was not aware that others were watching. You could sometimes see her moving her lips as if having an intense conversation with some invisible being. It seemed quite convincing one day as one young man pulled up to her from the side of the road, though she did not sense him. Oddly enough, because she was as sensitive or even more sensitive than the princess and the pea, she finally did take notice several minutes later; enough for him to know that there was a dimension that he was not as aware of and he sat near by hoping he would perhaps hear or see some being whom Emerald was speaking to in such an encaptured dialog.
Emerald had ran into the scattered forest after pondering a vivid dream of the morning. Crying, she thought she was completely alone, but some wandering, yet good-hearted young man stood within a stones throw from her. He said “You know, when I’m upset I just do manual labor. I chop some logs or I go for a run.” She replied “I had a dream and it was not good and it was of a spiritual kind. This is how I intercede. It’s how I pray. It is sort of a release of a weight that has suddenly attached itself to me. I know you don’t understand because emotions don’t come easy to you, but my tears are the very things that are like seeds for fields to grow.”
The young stocky man said “My name is Kelly and I am not from around here and I don’t understand those sorts of things though I‘d like to. But I do get the feeling that you are sincere and so I trust that feeling. Forgive me for the advice I’ve given as I only know what works for me.”
So Emerald told the dream which didn’t make a whole lot of verbal sense but could be understood quite easily by those who are sensitive to the visual side of life. Kelly revealed “This is truly not the best news I’ve heard, but I believe there is a message in there of what we can do. Yes, prayer is one answer but this thing needs to be released in more ways than tears. It must be spoken out. We must seek to understand that there is some plan that needs to take place and we need more clues. We must seek understanding.”
So they both prayed both silently and aloud; fervently and expectantly; listening and watching for the rest of the day. No distinct answer was found for a long stretch of time but clues did abound as they watched the animals of the forest sneak upon them in stillness. A woodpecker started tapping on a distant poplar tree and thoughts began to loosen from the grips of both of their minds. It was as if the silence had released them and now an unexpected sound broke through.
Kelly said “The nails! Yes, the nails! They did not serve to pin Him down. They actually were like a sign you post when you are making an announcement. An announcement that you took the time to write and to cause a gathering for some kind of occasion. The Word is posted for all to read. It proclaims the news, the good news. Oh, no gimmicks though. Straight forward and quite dramatic, quite sweet with a love that allows itself to bleed shamelessly and awfully and yet not always explaining. But sometimes just hinting and drawing you to wonder and wrestle for understanding.”
Emerald said “I did want a complete answer to the dream but it seems like this is all we can handle for now. I’m sure there is more depth and because of the dread the dream brings on, there must be more answers in days to come as we go deeper in our understanding of the dream maker.” Kelly said “Yes, we must continue to get to know this dream maker in any way we know how. No matter which way we come from.”
Eventually Kelly and Emerald became good friends and prayer partners and got married and became Mrs. And Mr. Green. Nearly a year after their marriage there was born a child named Ivy who started crawling all over the rolling hills of the town of Jade. One time the poor child wandered rather far it’s little crib, but the couple always followed the trail of the vine the tot was connected to. They were glad for their prayer line and for their connection to the vine and never did they lose their mobile child who was quite curious and roamed just like it’s pop. The tot crawled over fences and on top of trees and even buildings, particularly solid stones and heated bricks, and the mother wondered at the gifts of this unusual child. Once the child got moving, it seemed as if things started attaching themselves to him. Perhaps it was the other way around but who could keep track and watch that intently. It was almost miraculous that the pipsqueak never did get a scratch or a bruise as it's knees covered much ground traveling on the various terrain though far and near. The babe just kept on growing and stretching in faith and hanging on in steep places where most do not blossom.
The main street of Jade found itself covered by this child’s lace making. Just almost as if you couldn’t open a window without wondering how it all happened so quickly, but it actually was subtle in it’s beginnings and then sprouted lavishly after a time that nobody took record of. But the Greens knew the day that they first saw that distinctive color and have been watching for it's sighting since. And the town, well it isn’t quite as jaded as it’s name in the end. It ended up quite bright and jewely and like a fresh start, it all because of the dream that needed to be understood and spun and worked with the fine hands of the dream giver and maker. And it all happened in the Country of Greenland.
But then it spread to other lands and continents and more children were born from the Greens such as Moss and Herb and Fern and the twins Chlora & Phil. Quite an impact was the Green family upon the earth; and sure there were seasons that you didn't see much of them, but they always came back sometimes in places like Death Valley. You never quite knew the exact day, but you knew you'd see them sometime perhaps on a picnic or on a walk in the woods. Yep, they could even be captured by the lense of an astronaut from quite a far distance and he would be impressed by their coloring. Who is to know how far into the universe their hue has stretched.
