INTRODUCTION
If you follow through Proverbs my poetic endeavor,
You will find some things I believe quite clever,
And sometimes it will even be found,
That somethings will be truly profound.
Most, however, are not deep or sublime,
But at least every line of it will rhyme.
Prologue: Purpose and Theme
1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
2 for attaining wisdom and discipline;
for understanding words of insight;
Solomon first casts a verbal beam,
To reveal to us his purpose and theme.
His hope is for us to attain wisdom, and discipline too,
And to understand words that are insightful and true.
3 for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life,
doing what is right and just and fair;
He desires that we acquire a disciplined and prudent life,
Which will benefit all, especially our children and wife.
This ideal life is not one where we are free from all care,
But one where we love doing right, and being just and fair.
4 for giving prudence to the simple,
knowledge and discretion to the young-
He hopes that sound judgment will come to the simple,
Making that part of their brain larger than a pimple,
And that the young will advance in knowledge,
And develop discretion greater than most in college.
5 let the wise listen and add to their learning,
and let the discerning get guidance-
6 for understanding proverbs and parables,
the sayings and riddles of the wise.
Let the wise listen and add to their learning,
And let a flame of hunger in their heart be burning,
To get the guidance they need from the wise,
Who share their wisdom in a sort of disguise,
For they speak to us in proverbs and then there is more,
For then come parables, sayings and riddles galore.
7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge,
but fools [a] despise wisdom and discipline.
The fear of the Lord is where knowledge begins;
He whose not starting here, the race of life never wins.
Such is the fool who God's wisdom despises,
Who falls into folly and never again rises.
Exhortations to Embrace Wisdom
Warning Against Enticement
8 Listen, my son, to your father's instruction
and do not forsake your mother's teaching.
9 They will be a garland to grace your head
and a chain to adorn your neck.
If you are into jewelry man, I have a great plan for you.
Just pay attention to what your parents teach you to do.
Their lessons on life will guide you to rich reward,
A chain will you adorn, and your life will please the Lord.
10 My son, if sinners entice you,
do not give in to them.
11 If they say, "Come along with us;
let's lie in wait for someone's blood,
let's waylay some harmless soul;
If sinners entice you my son,
Don't follow, but the other way run.
They, of course, will say
Please do not run away.
We will have some fun today,
As some nobody we waylay.
12 let's swallow them alive, like the grave, [b]
and whole, like those who go down to the pit;
It will be so easy to rob this poor guy,
And even kill him, if he our will tries to defy.
If he gets rough and begins to throw a fit,
We will send this jerk down to the pit.
13 we will get all sorts of valuable things
and fill our houses with plunder;
When we have everything the man owns,
You will be done with your wimpy groans,
For you will with us be shouting like thunder,
For our place is now filled with all of this plunder.
14 throw in your lot with us,
and we will share a common purse"-
Stop trying to go the other way,
And join us now this very day.
We will be partners in crime,
And you will have a great time,
For no longer will you need to be poor,
For you will have riches like never before.
15 my son, do not go along with them,
do not set foot on their paths;
16 for their feet rush into sin,
they are swift to shed blood.
My son, they can sound so persuasive,
But they are really deceiving and evasive.
Don't take one step on their path,
For it ends under God's holy wrath.
For they will rush you right into sin,
And you will be in a place you've never been.
You will end up guilty of shedding blood,
And regret will swarm over you like a flood.
17 How useless to spread a net
in full view of all the birds!
My son, don't be as blind as one can get:
Don't you see, these fools are spreading a net,
And it is right in full view of their prey,
Which they hope to catch, and then get away.
18 These men lie in wait for their own blood;
they waylay only themselves!
The folly of these men is beyond belief;
They are perfect examples of a stupid thief.
Don't be an idiot like them my boy,
For it is their own lives they will destroy.
19 Such is the end of all who go after ill-gotten gain;
it takes away the lives of those who get it.
You will reap as you sow my son,
And these fools will live their life on the run.
They intend to cause pain in getting illegal gain,
But they lose their own lives; they are criminally insane.
Warning Against Rejecting Wisdom
20 Wisdom calls aloud in the street,
she raises her voice in the public squares;
21 at the head of the noisy streets she cries out,
in the gateways of the city she makes her speech:
Listen not to fools, but to the call of wisdom in the streets.
She raises her voice everywhere with a message she repeats.
No matter how noisy the streets are with a great crowd,
She makes her speech clear as she shouts aloud.
22 "How long will you simple ones [d] love your simple ways?
How long will mockers delight in mockery
and fools hate knowledge?
How long will you simple ones love your simple ways?
How long will you not see that mockery never pays?
How long will you mock those who love knowledge,
Because you hate it, and your ignorance you'll not acknowledge.
23 If you had responded to my rebuke,
I would have poured out my heart to you
and made my thoughts known to you.
If you had only listened and responded to my voice,
I would have made a very different choice,
For I would have poured out my heart to you,
And you would know my thoughts so rich and true.
24 But since you rejected me when I called
and no one gave heed when I stretched out my hand,
25 since you ignored all my advice
and would not accept my rebuke,
But, and what a big but, for a but-head like you,
For you would not let one word of mine get through.
All I got from you was rejection and ignoring;
You responded to my advice like one asleep and snoring.
26 I in turn will laugh at your disaster;
I will mock when calamity overtakes you-
It's not nice to fool with mother nature's Master,
For he gets the last laugh, and you get disaster.
You got your share of mocking, all agree its true,
But its not so funny when your mocking day is due.
You had your laughs and had your fun,
But now your folly days are done.
Your life bore no fruit, but only chaff,
And now God has the final laugh.
27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm,
when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind,
when distress and trouble overwhelm you.
28 "Then they will call to me but I will not answer;
they will look for me but will not find me.
When calamity overtakes you like a raging storm;
When distress and disaster come like bees in a swarm,
Then you will cry out to me, but I will not reply,
And you will search for me in futility until you die.
29 Since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD,
30 since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke,
31 they will eat the fruit of their ways
and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.
They hated knowledge; fear of me they would not choose,
Rejecting my advice and rebuke means, they will lose,
For they will eat of the fruit of their foolish ways,
And dine on this bitter fruit to the end of their days.
32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them,
and the complacency of fools will destroy them;
The wayward ways of the simple is a dead end,
They will die with no security on which to depend;
The complacency of fools ends the same way,
Making it clear to all, crime and folly does not pay.
33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety
and be at ease, without fear of harm."
Listen, oh please listen, for listening is a charm;
All those who will listen to wisdom will escape harm.
Listening is the key to safety, and a life without fear,
So listen up and listen, for the buck stops here.
