Humanity worldwide is in crisis. Young or old, rich or poor, famous or obscure, no one is immune. What's the crisis? Most human beings do not know who they are.
It's an identity crisis. It's a crisis from which springs many of the problems that we face as human beings. For millions of people, the crisis begins with not acknowledging God as their creator. They don't understand the intrinsic value that is theirs, having been made in the very image of God. Nor do they recognize that value in others. They have, first of all, failed to understand or accept their identity as a creation of God.
Then there are those who understand that God is their creator, but that's where it ends for them. What they fail to comprehend is that they need a relationship with their creator. Only this will restore their rightful identity.
The narrative of Adam and Eve in the Garden is much more than a story. It is true history. It is the historical account of we humans, forfeiting the relationship we once had with God, and with that, losing our identity. The first two people knew that God Himself created them. They lived in intimate relationship with Him. They experienced His unconditional love. They had purpose and meaning. Adam and Eve knew who they were.
But they lost all of that. Choosing to rebel against the One who loved them, they plunged the entire human race into a crisis of identity. Every descendant of that first couple would begin life separated from God. Intimacy with their creator was replaced with rebellion against Him. The sense of purpose the first couple experienced was substituted with a restless search for meaning. Loneliness, hurt, and anger became the norm.1 They did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God (Romans 1:28). Guilt and shame replaced peace and joy. Light was exchanged for darkness. Life was exchanged for death.
None of this caught God by surprise. The fact is, God already had a plan to redeem humanity. He first announced it to the Deceiver, and it is recorded in Genesis 3:15: Someone would come to destroy the Serpent. So Jesus came to do just that. He came to destroy the Devil's work (I John 3:8), and to reunite a lost humanity to Himself (Colossians 1:19-22). He came to give life and to make us new creations in Him (2 Corinthians 5:14-21).
Each of us was born into Adam. That is, we were born sinful, separated from God. Those who have been born again by the Spirit of God, through faith in Jesus, are "in Christ." Every person on the planet today is either still "In Adam" or they are "In Christ." However, even many of those who are in Christ, have not come to recognize their true identity in Him.
In the coming days, we will be looking at the topic of identity.
- What does it mean to be in Christ?
- What lies concerning our identity do many of us still believe?
- How can we help both others, and ourselves more fully realize our true identity in Jesus?
Allow me to pose a question: Where would you say that you find your identity?
