Looking at his disciples, he said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. “Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets. “But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort. Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep. Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you, for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets. Luke 6:20-26 NIV
Are you truly blessed or full of woes? Christ can answer that question for you. Let’s see what He is telling us in this passage.
Those who are poor can refer to those who are not caught up in requiring earthly wealth. They find their wealth in Christ Jesus. To them belongs the kingdom of God. But woe to those who hunger after the earthly riches at the expense of others and in failing to serve God. Their earthly wealth is all that they shall receive.
Blessed are those who hunger now. They hunger for the word of God and for doing His will. In so doing they shall be fully satisfied. Those who are well fed now with the desires of man, for that which is perishable and not eternal, they shall hunger, for they shall not see the kingdom of God. They shall be banished from God’s sight eternally and will grieve their fate.
Blessed are those who weep now. They feel remorse over their sinfulness. They seek a forgiving God. They seek a Savior who provides salvation to the lost and wretched sinner. They shall “laugh” in that they are redeemed, saved from eternal destruction through the saving blood of the Master. Those who laugh now, who are caught up in their earthly desires: earthly riches, fame, power, etc. These will weep and mourn as they face their eternal fate.
Are you persecuted and rejected, not accepted because of your belief in Jesus Christ, or are you accepted and praised because you seek the approval of man over the approval of God? The first of these will receive eternal wealth while the later will face eternal torment.
So, I ask you, are you blessed or full of woes? If you are not truly blessed, then turn your life over to Jesus Christ and you will receive true blessing beyond your wildest dreams!!
