When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. Luke 2:15-20 NIV
Notice that the shepherds hurried off to find Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus, just as it had been told to them by the angel. There was no waiting around on the part of the shepherds. This was very important for them to do.
When the shepherds found everything just as they had been told, they spread the news as to what they had been told about the child. Yes, these shepherds were evangelists for the new born king! And, as a matter of fact, they were effective evangelists, as we are told “all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.” And what did the shepherds do after spreading the word about the baby? They returned praising and glorifying God. God had revealed the birth of the world’s Savior to them. So they praised and glorified God!
Mary had much to reflect upon. She had been visited by an angel and told she would bear a son, even though she was a virgin. Today we have artificial insemination, but not 2000 years ago. So the fact that this virgin bore a child is a miracle, and I am sure Mary pondered this much. Then she discovered that her cousin Elizabeth who was far advanced in years, and barren was also to have a child. Then to have the shepherds and the Magi visit her and Joseph and be told what they had heard…it was much to be reflected upon. This young woman knew that her baby boy was certainly no ordinary child, though she could not totally understand His purpose yet.
How often, like Mary, do we ponder about Jesus? There is so much we could reflect on about our Savior. We can never cease to be amazed at who He is, and all that He has done for us! Thank you Lord Jesus for being our Savior and Redeemer! AMEN!!
