Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!” John 13:37-38 NIV
What must Peter have felt when Jesus told him that he would deny Christ three times before the rooster crowed. It must have felt like a slap to the face or a punch in the stomach. It must have really hurt Peter. He wanted to prove Christ was in error, but, as we know, Peter did deny the Lord three times that fateful night.
I believe those of us who belong to Christ do have times when we get a bit too haughty and pious in our walk with the Lord. We feel we are invincible to the flaming darts and cunning ways of the evil one. We feel like nothing can bring us down to our knees. Just as Jesus prayed for Peter, He prays for us. Jesus knows all the evil ways of Satan and intercedes on our behalf before the Heavenly Father.
Jesus can also say to any of us today as He said to Peter nearly 2000 years ago that we will deny Him. We will deny Him by giving in to an act of sin. Temporarily we will deny Christ. However, the conscience of a believer will not allow the sin to control the believer. Remorse and guilt will fill the heart and soul of the believer. Jesus told Peter that he must forgive anyone who wronged him not seven times, but, seventy times seven times. How many times do you believe our Lord stands ready to forgive the repentant sinner who comes to Him seeking the cleansing of sin that only Christ can provide? Christ’s love, mercy, and forgiveness is eternal. It has no ending. We need for Christ’s forgiveness of our sins to be an eternal forgiveness. Christ was and is the everlasting sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins. No further sacrifice is required. The power of this sacrifice shall last forever for those who believe in Jesus.
May we seek to always be humble and avoid haughty or pious ways. Let us always be faithful servants for our Lord and the Heavenly Father. AMEN!!
