" . . . And they bowed down and worshipped Him" Matthew 2:11 NIV
It seems that the wise men travelled together for up to two years (Matthew 2: 7 & 16). They may have come from different cultures and possibly didn't know each other before they started the journey. So why did they choose to travel together? Perhaps because of what they had in common. They had the same destination, the same burning conviction, the same dream of worshipping the King that outweighed the inconveniences. They were all prepared to pay the price in time, in commitment and in bringing a gift. To sacrifice their pride, their preconceived ideas, their understanding - to worship at a humble place and not at a palace like they expected (Matthew 2: 1 & 2).
And isn't that like our church families? As a church we come from different backgrounds, have different expectations and different preferences but yet, like the wise men we have chosen for this time, whether for months or years to be together. We have the same destination to worship the King so we must also sacrifice the convenient, the customary and the comfortable.
The wise men traveled together because they needed each other. They needed the encouragement and the fellowship to keep hope alive in their hearts. In the church, we also need each other for the same reasons.
This Christmas, as we gather with our church family to worship, to fellowship and to stir up hope in our hearts, may it be that our worship will be a precious gift to our King.
