Fiction
It was after 10 p.m. Professor Geek grimaced as he drove by the Trinity River in West Dallas. He was on the on the wrong side of town. His eyes darted all about and he held his breath until he heard the click reassuring him that he had just locked all the doors. Shaking his head he mumbled, “I must have taken a wrong turn."
The New Testament Greek Professor from Baylor often taught on different campuses. He shook his head. Why did they always seemed to schedule his two hour class for 8 p.m. It sure made for long days.
Suddenly the sight ahead made his blood curdle. A bunch of teens started scrambling in different directions. The body of a young teenage girl lie lifeless in a pool of blood by the side of the road. His head started spinning and he spued out chunks of his steak dinner all over his 2013 Toyota.
He reached for his cell, and then thought better. If I call the cops I’ll be here all night answering questions. It’s not like I really saw anything. Better just scurry home and try to forget I ever laid my eyes on such a gross sight. With tears in his eyes, he sped away.

The local pastor of Trinity River Church was returning home from a church meeting. Why had the discussion taken so long? The struggling church was on the verge of moving out of the West Dallas area. It was so dangerous they had to have four the men patrol the parking lot during services. If we don’t move soon, we are in big trouble. How can I convince the congregation that it’s not the building, but the people that make up the church? Could we make this a user-friendly church for the people in the area? Maybe we won’t have to move.
His thoughts were interrupted by the sight of young teenage girl lying in a pool of blood. On closer look, he realized she wasn’t from the area. Too bad. He reached for his cell. No, he’d better not get involved. She was probably already dead. This spelled trouble. With a sigh, he drove away.
***************
A young medical student from Baylor drove down the unfamiliar street in West Dallas. It was so dark! Her heart beat faster. How did she wind up by the Trinity River? Where did she make a wrong turn?
She felt the blood drain from her face and tried to steady herself. On the side of the road lie a girl in a pool of blood. Knife wounds? She wasn’t sure.
Shamret Yadegari grabbed her cell and called 911. “There’s a medical emergency here. Please send an ambulance at once. A teenage girl - loss of blood, unconscious. I’m a fourth year medical student and I’ll do what I can until help arrives.”
With shacky hands she unlocked her door. It wasn’t safe for a young woman to be alone in this area, but the condition of this young girl tugged at her heart. She applied pressure to the wound. .
Blood was everywhere. She checked her blood pressure, 105/40 – not good. The girl’s face was flush, her breathing shallow. She needed a transfusion, the sooner the better. She cleaned and bound the wounds as best she could with her limited supplies. She put a jacket under her head. Then she found a blanket thrown on the back seat and covered her.
After what seemed like an eternity, she heard the sirens screaming down the block. She told the paramedics everything she knew about the situation, and watched as they loaded the young lady into the ambulance. Shamret followed them as they sped to Parkland Memorial Hospital.
At the emergency room the doctors and nurses stabilized her. A lady from admittance came over and spoke with Shamret.
“Excuse me, are you with this young lady.”
“Yes.”
Does she have any ID?
“No.”
“What about insurance?”
“No.”
“I’m sorry, but she will have to be transferred to the County Division. If you go down the hall, they can take care of it there.”
Shanret reached in her purse and gave the lady her credit card. “I’ll cover the expenses.”
“I can’t stay long,” said Shamret to the nurse, “I have classes in the morning. Please look after our young teenage friend. I’ll be back. Here’s my cell number, if you need to get in touch.”
Suddenly the girl’s eyes fluttered open.
“It’s okay. You’re in Parkland Memorial Hospital. Just lie back and relax.” Shamret told her.
“What’s your name?”
But the teenager had faded out of consciousness.
************
Later that afternoon, Shamret arrived to find Linda, for that was the girl’s name, sitting up.
“Who are you? Why are you helping me?” she asked.
The afternoon sun filtered through the window.
“I’m Shamret. I found you on the side of the road. You looked like you needed a friend.”
As she smiled, Linda stared at her. “I don’t get it. No one cares about me. I have no friends, no family. Why would you care?”
How well Shamret remembered her arrival in the US as a refugee from Iran – no ID, no money, no family. She only had the Lord.
“Linda, let me tell you about my best Friend...”
