Faith
Positively Faith by Liza Washburn
One out of eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. What that means, as I look around the room is that 3 of us will be diagnosed in our lifetime. That statistic is alarming, to say the least, but it is a statistic that warrants much acknowledgement and questions. The biggest question that comes to mind is how does one persevere through a diagnosis of breast cancer? After experiencing this myself, I’d have to say that you have to have to be very strong in your faith and you have to stay positive (easier said than done).
What is Faith though? Faith is one of those things that don’t come easy, because faith is having a strong belief in God, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof. Faith is not tangible or something you can see outright, rather something that is planted within a person. It is the thread that keeps one together. It is the belief that there is a God. It is the podium in which one stands firm in their belief. It is so hard to describe faith to one that doesn’t have it, but faith is what got me through my mastectomy, my reconstruction, and my numerous doctor visits. It is what gets me through daily. Faith was what I stood firm on when consoling my best friend and my husband. It was what I had when I had to tell my children that Mommy had cancer. Looking back, it was faith that got me through all of the hard times.
But let me back up a little, because I haven’t always had the faith I have now. Faith has been a process and a journey, very personal and slow. I didn’t grow up in a faith based home, nor was I taken to church, or even spoken to about God so this thing that people spoke about was so incomprehensible, so foreign. It literally snuck up on me. Looking back, I think it started with the birth of my first child. I had this strong feeling that something was missing, so we started going to church. Eventually we found ourselves going weekly because we needed to hear the positive messages they were speaking, so it really started out as a refueling for the week. From there we felt challenged to go to classes; classes on marriage, on parenting, and on spiritual needs, everything we could get our hands on. We, as a couple, started to read His word. We started to teach our children the word and little by little we started to see the changes in our lives and in our children’s lives. Twelve years later coupled with my cancer diagnosis, this thing called faith that people had been speaking of was very omnipresent. For you see, I know that by being open to change the last twelve years, God had been slowly working on my heart and had been preparing me for the day I needed to have that strong faith.
Another thing that is so imperative in the healing process, but go hand in hand with faith, is to stay positive. A real challenge in a relatively negative society, but in my opinion, a crucial part in overcoming the gloom and doom that cancer invites into one’s life. Being positive requires a shift in thinking, it is a choice. Start by developing better relationships. Surround yourself with other positive people. Then start by finding someone that you can be good to that day, making it a conscious attempt to make someone’s day better. Once you put these things into play, the changes start to happen. Be deliberate, be purposeful, and be bold. Smile at people because the world looks a little bit better behind a smile.
Staying positive and having a strong belief in faith may sound like something unattainable, but once you start to live your life with purpose, changes start to happen. In essence, develop your inner self and your outer self will reflect and shine through. If you are looking for something to get you through the hard times and you want to be a better person then you need to start by pairing your positive actions with your faith.
